Hi CNPOWer,

You have added new word to Oxford Dictionary, troublem=trouble+problem.

Several reasons may account for it:

Your computer is not registered in the domain-network so the network software does not see you hence you do not see the others. If windows network, then ask to be registered with the Active Directory Services, if in Unix or Linus then contact your Systems Administrator to do the same with whatever Network software that is being used.

Your computer is not listed in the Look-up list or the DNS of the network, in which case the presence of the other computers will not be communicated to your computer hence you do not see them.

The infrastructure is a Unix/Linux Network and you are using windows OS or vice versa; in that case you will need a helper software, such as SAMBA, but there may be others.

I hope this is helpful

Hi, JACOJAN,

I feel for you. I'm working on the insipidity of Windows Server 2003.

I could really use some more information from you.

Is the laptop a Pentium class or a duo-core?

Which operating system are you using on the laptop, XP Pro or Vista?

What is the network running, Server 2003, Server 2008, Linux, XP pro in Workgroup mode, Peer to Peer?

Can you log on to the internet from your LAN? If you can, then your laptop may not have permission from the Server to access any of the other system resources, such as systems, and printers. Talk to your Network Manager and have him give you a User Name and a password to log onto the LAN.

If you don't have a Network Manager and if you are using any version of Windows on the laptop, and your server is also on Windows, down load a program called 'Network Magic'. This program gives you a 7 day trial. It will see every system connected to the network.

That's about the best I can do with the information that you gave me. It would be helpful if I had the full Specs. to your machine and as much info about the LAN, the Router, the Modem (DSL or Cable), and the Server as possible.

Let me know what the result of this test is and I will have a better idea of how to continue.

Now type >NET VIEW and also >NET HELP

If you are connected to anything the VIEW command with stream the results to STDOUT which is the screen.

>NET HELP shows the various NET commands and paramters of these commands that you can run from the command line.

You can add devices using >NET.

There may also be a GUI interface riding on top of the NET command (i.e. "Neighborhood network").

Microsoft has not yet broken this NET command to discourage competition, but I'm sure they will continue to try to do so.

Hey, Buddy,

I'm reasonably certain that you will need to speak with your network administrator to view and interact with the other systems on your LAN.

This is no big deal unless you are the system manager.

Is your Network using an assigned Server, that is, one machine that controls all access to all systems? There is only one network topology that does not use a Server and that would be a Peer to Peer (P2P) network.

If it is a Sever-Client system, then you must see the Network Admin for your WEP or WSK key, your user name and password.

If it's a Peer to Peer I will have to do some more research. I never liked Peer to Peer topology - they are not as secure as some would have us believe.

Did you ever have a log-on to this LAN? How far away are you from the Gateway? Are you working in an area with a lot of machines, this would include microwave ovens, refrigeration units, wireless and cordless phones, or numerous with 60 cycle motors?

I'm sorry, but I must ask again, do you have permission to log in to this Local Area Network? I ask because, if you can log onto the Internet and assuming you are getting a strong signal, you may have to log on to a Domain or join a Workgroup. That can only be done with, in the case of a Domain, with the Administrator assigning you a WEP/WSK number, or, in the case of a workgroup, WEP/WSK plus the network encryption key.

What position do you hold in the company? It would be infinitely easier to ask the Network Administrator of the systems operator. Unless you can prove to me that you have permission, or you are the Network Administrator or the Systems Operator, I can 'talk you through' how to setup you Server/Workgroup but I can't go much farther ahead without knowing that you have the WEP or WSK number and the Network Encryption key.

I am not accusing you of anything. I am merely covering by back. If someone is attempting fraud, then what I'm doing can be viewed as aiding and abetting.

Also, who us your Internet Service Provider, and who set up your network initially?

It appears that you are on your home network. It is actually very simple. Since you are already connected to your internet router (you said you can log on to the internet), you verly likely only need to "Add new network places." Click on "Start" and then "Network Places." Add your home network if it doesn't show up. Then, inside that home network you can add the individual machines (they may even show up as options to add to your network places at this point - also may not depending on Windows version). You must know the name you have given to your home network and know the names you have given to the individual computers. If this doesn't work, open your Control panel and click on "Network Connections" One of your choices on the left side will be to create a new network connection (your computer to your home lan) or set up an lan connection. Since you are home, you already know the name of your home network. Just follow the directions and QED. If you are trying to get in on someone elses lan, naughty naughty! Go buy yourself a router and internet service and hook up your home computers.

Hi, Buddy,

Re-read what Eriew wrote in posts 5 and 7 and what PhysicsProf wrote in post 9.

If you are trying to join a Home Network then PhysicsProf has your answer. Let me know if this worked or not. If not, I will dig a little deeper. You may have a more traditional network topology and that would mean logging onto the Server and setting up User accounts, Passwords, etc.

That takes a bit more playing around with.

As before, keep us posted.

Try sharing the C partition to initialize network, and then unshare it. This works in my company on some computers.
