Mil vs micron

09/17/2008 5:25 AM

What is the difference for mil(US) and micron(EU). Both indicate gauge/thickness of thin materials like plastics or paper. What is the ratio for Mil vs micron?

0.001 in is also called a "thou": 0.055in = "55 thou".

"Mill" (with 2 'l's) is also used as short-speak for "millimetres": "15 mill" = 15mm, or a "gnat's" under 5/8in.

When I change this unit, I ususlly do like this,

1'' = 1000mil = 2.54cm = 25.4mm = 25.4x1000um

inch (mil) and um are also length unit.

Long ago when I was dealing in Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner normally rated at .01 micron efficoency/ a Filter rated 2 micron/o.5 miron, I recal reading that 1" if divided 28400 times - that 1 part of the inch or 1/28400" = 1 micron. The dust that we see in the sun rays floating is 300 micron and below 250 micron you cannot see. It made my understanding on the micron easier.

PS It can be 26400th part of an inch.
