Biodiesel From Algae

10/02/2006 11:23 AM

Hello!, I´m from Costa Rica very interested in to know more about alternative fuels to petroleum, specially in biodiesel from algaes growing in artificial ponds and in water treatment effluents. My interest is to know about: technology, facts, comparision between this alternative and others, type of algaes, how to obtain seeds, technology transfer, world around search institutions, available funds, etc.

You might want to check out Jatropha seeds as an alternative. It is easy to grow and is becoming very popular.

Good luck

Hi Ron,

Jatropha is for dryland and question placed is for algae which is meant for wet land.

I think here one can find some kind algae for wet land based bio-fuel. I think it is a great idea for backwater economy where crocodiles and anaconda live together. In India, algae is used as fertilizer and is very effective. It is fast growing, environmental friendly and highly productive. I will give several plus points for this technology. It can be tried in small water storage in your kitchen garden along with water storage.

Thank you for your repply. Can you provide more details about your investigations? In regard with the type of algae I´m just learning different types, growing media and performances. Maybe the dryland alternative could be useful for a part of our country. I mentioned the alternative of raising algaes in artificial ponds, specifically the ponds for water treatment. I really am not sure but I think that this kind of algae "eats" the waste like other plants. I will apreciate if you can provide to me more information about investigations and projects developed in your country. I know that you have long time investigating energy alternatives. Thanks again, I will follow your recomendation.

In Guanacaste there are very dry soils during around 8 months per year. Where I can find Jatropha seeds for testing? What is the performance of this algae for biodiesel use? Can you provide more details about this algae? Thanks in advance.

Jatropha is a bush or tree. I offered it as an alternative. Seeds are available online. Just do a search online. The oil can be extracted easily. The plants produce for 30 years. There may be some toxicity problems, and storage of the oil has special requirements.

I have read this NREL study on biodiesel from algae and found it to be comprehensive. As of the study publication date, they determined that building the pond, even an open lagoon with a mixed algal culture, is more expensive than the biodiesel is worth. A shame, though, that the program was ended just as biotechnology techniques were taking off. Some firms, like GreenFuel Technologies Corp. are dealing with the economics by developing algal systems that make biodiesel as a co-product.
