PLACEMENT OF VALVE

09/20/2008 6:07 AM

AT MANY PLACES I HAVE TO PUT VALVE AT HIGER ELEVATION....SAY 15FT AND ABOVE THE FLOOR LEVEL. I CAN PUT A PLATFORM TO OPERATE THE VALVE. BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY HANDLING/LIFTING ARRANGEMENT FOR MAINTENANCE OF VALVE. WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE WAYS TO HANDLE THE VALVE FROM GROUND FLOOR OF BUILDING WITHOUT PROVIDING ANY MONORAIL OR CRANE.

THE VAVLE MAY BE GATE/GLOBE/CHECK/CONTROL VALVE TYPE.

I have many valves over head on my air line drops. They are all at 12 to 15 feet. I used a ball valve which has a hole in the handle. With a pole I can hook the hole and open and close the valve.

Is there room for a forklift with a fork-boom?

How about simply adding lifting lugs to adjacent structures?

This mobile work platform has a 500 lb. load, and up to a 18 ft' working hight.

There are many companies that manufacturer this type of lift. How do you change light bulbs?

I have a few valves overhead that we installed double ended handles on and we operate them from the ground with a chain, or a long rod.

Valves don't usually require any routine maintenance. They will work for years before any maintenance is needed. Opening and closing the valve repeatedly can cause the valve to leak over time. At that time, a forklift or long ladder can be used to maintain the valve. If you just want to operate the valve from the ground, there are various types of remote operating valves that can be used. They can be operated by mechanical linkages, electric and air powered motors. A platform and ladder would be a simple solution and could be done by in-house personnel.

Yes I agree with Mukal. It is cheaper solution to fit Hand Chain Wheel with hand chain of required length. Such HCWs are available with any rigger shop in your area who sell Chain Pulley Blocks, wire ropes etc.

Chains are ok if there is no chance of moving equipment getting hung up in them and you don't mind dirt and junk falling on your head when you operate the valve.

Otherwise why not pneumatic actuators for simple open/shut and positioners for better control and use butterfly valves.

This mobile work platform has a 500 lb. load, and up to a 18 ft' working hight.

If your valve is that heavy, you will need a stronger version of the man lift.

There are many companies that manufacturer this type of lift.

How do you change light bulbs?

Third row from the bottom, first key on the left. See what happens when you push it.

You can use hydraulic lifting platform of 15' ht. and 2 Tonne capacity. These are available in manual operation or battery operated. If you are from India then I can suggest you few mfrs. otherwise you have to search for local mfr. so that servicing is not a problem.

If you can route electric current to it, you can use a solinoid valve. The valve can be opened and closed with the flip of a switch.

Make motorise chain drive or manual chain drive system in Gate/globe valve.Check/control valve don't require manual operation. In Motorise chain drive system - Motor will be connected to gear which will further transmit power by chain & sprocket system.Other side sprocket will be connected to spindle or spindle gear unit.Motorise system can be simplify by only manual chain & spindle side sprocket.

There are many ways the do rigging to install a large valve and I think I have probably seen the best and the worst cases of this in my 30 yeas or working with pipe. What I would suggest is to look over the area to determine if there are places you can rig from. If you have places that are strong enough to rig chain falls and/or come-a-long hoists from you can do this with little problem. If this is the case then I would also suggest for you to generate a procedure ahead of time that details this work and not leave it to the persons that are doing the work to come up with. If the valve is high maintenance or a big liability to safety or productivity when it is out of service then I would recommend a monorail beam and hoist be installed. I know that the up front cost is higher to install the lifting beam but the safety and speed that is seen when you have a dedicated beam/hoist that you know can hold and move the load is priceless in my opinion.

Material handling equipment (forklifts, chain hoists, winches, etc)should not used to move/lift personnel. I believe it is against OSHA rules. A fixed platform and ladder system is the safest solution.
