What Chemical Solution could soften Coconut Shell?

The Coconut Shell has many uses in the Handicraft & Furniture Industries. Almost always, the hard round Coconut Shell has to be broken into pieces in order to be manipulated. Could the Coconut Shell be softened & flattened - with a Chemical Solution?

Soften: by steam or hot pressurised water (120°C 1h ?)

This is used in furniture production. The famous Thonet invented this for large scale beechwood bending for the coffehouse chairs.

So I assume this process will work on coconut shells also.

Flattten: I don't think so as this is not bending but stretching.

Softening it might work as others have described for wood, but flattening? It's not the sort of shape that lends itself to flattening without cutting it in some way.
