the right size for electrical cable

09/22/2008 7:00 PM

It may be a simple question.I'm not in the electrical side but there is one deep well facility newly installed in our section. The Electrical authority has installed a 120 mm squared size of cable( a 4 cored copper ) to give power to our deep well ( with submersible motor)having a capacity of 55kw and with 380 volts rate. The diatance of the deep well location from transformer to the control panel is 300 meter. Is it right that 120 mm squared size of cable installed for that facility?

Can you guys out there give me the right information of cable size and the allowable % of voltage drop, for copper wire particularly? Also the right formula for getting the voltage drop for a certain materials.

Thanks a lot.

Hello "Guest"

You need to advise the type of cable structure, before a proper answer may be given:

  1. Excelene
  2. Polythene
  3. Steel wire armour
  4. Location/Country
  5. etc - Advise....

Reply here, with

Kind Regards....

Please see previous posts on volt drop and cable sizing, otherwise get a trained and qualified professional (like an electrician) to do it for you.

Hi Guest,

You state that you are not an electrical person and the electrical authority has installed the cable. Then why you are doubting their competence?

In every country the electrical job has to be carried out under the direct supervision of a competent qualified electrical engineer as a mandatory safety rule. They are responsible to ensure the safety of the equipment and men operating the system. They are accountable for that. So leave electrical job to authorised electrical engineer. The selection of a cable is highly technical matter and need proper calculation depending up on type of cable, system voltage laying conditions, weather conditions of the location and many other de rating factors.

You say 'installed' - well does the pump work as you want it to?

What is your concern?

Dont worry 120mm is heaps even allowing for DOL starting the voltage drop is less than 2% when the pump is running. What I would like to know is why would you doubt the local electrical authority?
