The purpose of over load relays is to protect the motor from overload.

there are many types of overload relays on the market today, some monitor phase unbalance, faults, single phase etc.all of which usually have a normally open set of contacts and a set of normally closed contacts.

overload relays are typically sold in class 10,20,and 30, which basically is just a timer; in other words a class 10 overload would take 10 seconds before tripping out, class 20,would fault after 20 seconds and 30 after 30 seconds.

If you need more info Ill be glad to help.
