Problem with McAfee Antivirus

09/30/2008 2:01 AM

Dears

I have desktop PC 933Mhz, 80GB HD, 124MB Ram, Windows XP (Black Moon Edition) installed. I installed McAfee antivirus version 8.0i. After installation, I run a DAT file 5392 and after completion, the small icon for antivirus program, bottom right side of screen disappeared. Now I tried to scan the disk C but scanning did not start. I assumed that the anti virus program corrupted. I again installed software above mentioned and then run DAT 5393 update file but same problem faced. Can any body assist me how can I overcome on this problem?

Check for conflicting security software on your PC.

Hello Signode:

Firstly can I say I have not heard of the window XP Black Moon edition.

assuming it is from microsoft.................... I think I need a little more info'.

But, can you tell me, have you tried to un-install McAfee and re-install it? Often on the install there is a tick you can add or a button to press which allow the icon to sit in the tray at bottom right of the screen. Or you can often go to the settings section of (in this case) McAfee, and choose to put an icon in your tray, or, try right clicking the program icon in the main menu of windows XP, and it may give you the choice to put the icon in the tray from there?

Are you sure you need the DAT file, rather than the super DAT file? Though what difference it would make I cannot see.

Your system sounds quite modest. Is it up to using the latest file updates? No offence meant.....Read the instructions below in bold. They may help.

This is the detailed info I found for the download of the update you mention:

http://www.scanwith.com/McAfee_SuperDAT_Update_download.htm

HOW TO DOWNLOAD

1. You should only have to click on the Download link for the file that you want to download. When your browser asks you what to do with the downloaded file, select "Save" (your browser's wording may vary) and pick an appropriate folder.
If that doesn't work for some reason, on Windows you can click the link with the second mouse button (right click) to get the pop-up menu and select "Save Target As..." (again, the wording may vary).
2. It is strongly recommended to use a download manager if you're downloading large files. Internet Explorer does not support download resuming, and will not help you out if there is a problem with your download.

Uninstall McAfee and replace it with Norton. Make a backup of your computer with Norton Ghost on an extra hard drive on as frequent a time schedule as you can personally justify. Do not turn on Norton "Go-Back" it would be buggly on the system you described.

Hello Signode,

I've never heard of Windows XP Black Moon Edition. Any info on that would be appreciated.

One of the best antivirus programs on the market is an open source program called Clamwin which just happens to be free. Click the purple name Clamwin and download your software. Same company offers a program called Cyber-defender that's a spyware protector.

Un-install McAfee and sell it, if you can. I've had them all, McAfee, Norton several whose names I've forgotten. After 36 years, you've seen everything at least once. They all start out bright and robust and they seem to do miracles. Then they get picked up by corporate sponsors and the quality goes down the tubes.

So I look for a new kid trying to break into the business. That one kid has a great deal of pride in the product he is producing, so he'll do a good job producing it. Always look for open source free-ware/share-ware. I've had excellent results.

never heard of any Xp with black moon edition, so I presumed that you are using pirated version. I countered some pc that would have problems with antivirus due to pirated OS. Maybe you r one of those?

Some files also would cause some troubles. So, I would suggest you to download newer files that would fix that problems.

Thanks for replying

When Windows of my PC corrupted, an IT technician installed that window which, me too, never seen in any PC. I tried two times to uninstall and then re-install but the same problem faced.

Hello Signode:

This Blue Moon Software you was told was Microsoft Windows update IS NOT! It has nothing to do with Microsoft, or Windows in any way.

I have searched, including Microsoft's own site, and cannot find the software you mention. You say an IT technician installed it?

Was this an official IT company, or a friend 'doing you a favour'.

If The IT technician was from a known IT company in your area, or, you actually took your computer to a shop to get work done, then you can do something to get this straightened out.

If, it was a friend, or someone who said they could help you.........

If you know where they live or are based..........

If you paid for this 'work' to your computer and have proof..........

You may be able to get your computer mended............Without paying again.

Whether it is the corrupted Registry you had that is causing this problem, or, the Black Moon software is making things worse, I can't tell you that.

But if, as I have said a professional IT person told you this would make your machine better because it is an update, IT IS JUST NOT TRUE.

If I am wrong, I am sorry.................BUT, I think the so called IT person has installed software that has not come from Microsoft.

Keep us informed here please. We may be able to help.

Sorry for the bad news

Thanks for replying.

I have talked with IT Technician, which is originally a shop owner about "Windows Black Moon Edition" but he too don't know about its availability. He too bought from a person. Anyhow, I reinstalled Windows XP professional edition and found my problem solved.
