In New Zealand the largest terracotta tile makers add 10% of crushed broken prebaked tiles to the bulk mixture, before it goes to the kiln.
Adding prebaked tile crushings to the new tile mixture gives increased strength of that new tile, as it comes out of the tile press, before it goes through the kiln.
Historically the 'pantile' as in the picture above and left, was made by hand, over a man's forearm, which gave those early pantiles a characteristic tapered shape, which is not immediately noticeable as you look at a roof covered with pantiles.
Not all clays are suitable for tile manufacture.
Kind Regards....

Different tiles for different folks. The composition of the tiles will be determined by the location the tiles are used. In the northern part of the US, the tiles are not permitted to absorb any appreciable amount of water because of the freezing. But in south Florida, US, the tiles must absorb a certain amount of water to meet code requirements. In California, US, the mixture might be different again.
