How significant is Reverse Engineering in Car-Bumper (exterior) making process?

10/05/2008 9:05 PM

Is Reverse Engineering play a big role in making a car bumper?

How does a 3rd party manufacturer produce a car bumper? Are the CAD file easily achievable?

Currently, i'm thinking of using Faro's 3D Laser scanner and maybe rapidform xor to get the bumper CAD file.. is that ok?

i've come across with many kind of car bumper in the market. i beleive that some of it are custom made. But how exactly does it made? Extensive use of putty is it? Or injection moulding?

p/s: i'm a student and am doing this study for my coursework.. Hopefully i'll receive some help here.

Now a days almost all car manufacturer is using injection molded bumpers. It is very difficut to get the CAD design of any of those car bumper. But you can use the laser CMM to get the 3D CAD model of any product.

You will not get the strength if you will make it by the use of putty. It will be used to make the prototype of product. Making car bumper with the use of putty is not good as it will not survive in actual service condition.

Presently all car maufacture is using injection molded car bumper and using nylon for it. It require the 2000T injection molding machine and the mold cost will be in crors.

hye there,

i note that almost all bumper are made using the injection moulding technics, but my curiosity are also upon those which are customly made.. i mean in a smaller scale.. maybe made for only once.. how does this be made? if it were made using the same technics, injection moulding) aren't the cost will be sky-high..

Just my curiosity..

an engineering student.

Just a few notes. They are made of a TPO material and they are Injection Molded in a press between 3000 and 4000 tons the mold won't even fit in between the tie bars of a 2000t press.
