Internet Security for MAC

10/14/2008 2:33 PM

Yesterday my bro in-law received an e/m from his brother that he was in trouble in Africa and needed $1000 immediately. A Scam yes immediately known as he was in the room. It was also noted the e/m tags included the senders entire contact list as the intended receivers.

This email was some how spoofed from a MAC using Safari and I just don't know how to meekly say to him the perfection he sought has slipped away again

What measures should be initiated to prevent this in the future and what steps should he take immediately to thwart additional damage?

Thank you,

bwire

The simple answer is....

Don't read E-mails, and disconnect from the Internet, its ful of scammers, and very little information these days you can get for free.

The slighly harder answer, look for a "Anti-phishing" software for your favorite E-mail software, also a virus scanner, just cause your using a MAC (or Linux or SunOS) doesn't mean your going to avoid viruses altogether, just more prevalent on the most common OS (that is designed for any moron to use)

If your E-mail is on any list other than your computer, no doubt you'll get onto the phishing/scam/porn lists.

NEVER click on the "Unsubscribe here" links, its just a verification that your e-mail does exist and is a valid and working address, so can be on-sold as a "Valid Address"

When forwarding e-mails, remove all the headers from previous E-mails, its fantastic to get forwarded a E-mail and there are about 1000 email addresses at the top of the email before you get to the joke some place down the page.

His #1 reason for switching to MAC was to avoid these circumstances

He erroneously believed the hype

Switching from a PC to a mac is not going to change the amount of spam you get in your email inbox, the computer has nothing to do with that. The only thing that really matters is how good your spam blocker is in whatever e-mail client you are using.

Now if there was a virus in that email and he downloaded it, than the actual computer would come into play. This is where a mac would probably do better, due to the fact that most viruses are for PC's because that's what most people own.

Final advice, think about getting a new email address. Obviously, you put your email address in the wrong hands if you are getting these types of messages. I would still keep your current email address but get a new one that you can use to avoid the spam. Just be careful about who you give your email address to. For example, don't start signing up for some free giveaway because the first thing those places have you do is put in your email address. This is so they can sell it to other companies to send you advertisments (spam).

One of the big methods used to get valid email addresses are fake petitions (or hijack a real one). I've repeatedly warned my daughter of this when she forwards some apparently good cause. One special one out of Africa is about paediphilia in South Africa. This calls for mass forwarding and records valid addresses and instructs the user to forward the harvested addresses to a supposedly SA Govt department. Caution is needed at all times.

the best ones are the normal mail forwarding, you just hit the forward selection, and don't cut the previous E-mail addresses from the forwarded Email.

I have E-mails here that have pages of Email addresses before the 1 page of jokes.

the joke is, most of the Emails addresses in those are already "Known good addresses"

I receive these internet scams all the time. $15 million here, $10 million there, etc. My question is : are there any people who are dumb enough to fall for these scams? I would think anyone perpetrating a scam, is wasting his/her time. If you know of anyone who has fallen for a scam, let me know so I can also scam them.

Think of it with probability.

If 0.01% of the people reply, and there are well over 10 Million Internet users, do you think they have wasted their time and money?

What is the cost of sending out a E-mail? Internet bill, phone rental, power usage and thats all, E-mail is free after that.

Or get a personally addressed (hand written) envelope in the mail, and hand delivered so no postage asking for money to be sent to some pyramid scheme, and a 5 cent coin taped to the letter as "proof" of worth of that cause?
