Micro welding brass inserts into thermoplatics

10/16/2008 11:22 AM

Does anyone have information about micro welding brass inserts into thermoset plastics? I am looking at some torque issues that our process does not adequately address - any help would be great.

They are best molded in during the ijection molding process.
Pressed in inserts are generally pretty poor unless maybe ultrasonically inserted.
The press in ones which are split down part of their length are particularly dire.

Thanks for the input - seems that the only beter option than ultrasonic insertion is the Yardley self-tapping inserts.

Branson Ultrasonics makes just what you need.

Ultrasonic insertion is fine for thermoplastics, but the Original Poster said "thermoset". Molding in, or using self-tapping inserts, are the main options, in my opinion, with use of adhesives or separate tapping operations behind them for a variety of reasons. Welding of a thermoset plastic is generally not possible, as far as I am aware.

but the Original Poster said "thermoset".

But look at the title of the thread .
Aren't they both the same?
Isn't it resins which set by chemical action which are the odd one out?

Thermoplastics are like a box of chocolates (sorry, couldn't help myself!) If you heat them, they soften and melt. When cooled, they retain their new shape. Thermosets are like a fried egg. The heat creats a chemical reaction that causes the material to harden. After that, no amount of heating will melt the egg again, only burn it.

Brass threaded inserts can be installed into thermoplastics using ultrasonics, heat, self-tapping, pressed-in, or molded-in. Thermosets can only have them installed by self-tapping, pressed-in, or molded-in (although I would not want to place my hands into a 100 degree C or hotter mold to precisely place small inserts.)

The best insert depends on the precise plastic material and application.

Ta, I was confuzzed by the nomenclature whilst being aware of the different types.
