How to move data from 5.25 Inch disk to DVD?

10/18/2008 6:00 AM

Have Basic Language Nomogram programs on a 5.25 Inch floppy disk but no disk reader that size. Have searched internet with no luck. Does anyone know of a source for an external USB drive that will accept this size disk so I can put the programs on a DVD?

He is asking for a 5.25" drive, you provided links to 3.5" drives.

I believe the poster's best chance would be E-Bay or his local computer store, or traveling "show'

To the original poster--You will not find a 5.25" drive that is USB ready. You will have to either use parallel port drive, or internal. Neither will work with windows XP or beyond, but finding an old DOS computer should not be hard/nor expensive.

Once you have the data on the old computer's hard drive, then copying it to a modern format should be easy. In the past I had used a DOS program called FX- (FX.EXE) to copy files from old computers to Windows 2000 PCs---I do not believe this program will work with PC's beyond Win 2000.

Thanks for the response. Tried E-Bay with no luck either; will keep looking.

Silly me, I have just google 5.25 inch floppy drive and I have assumed that they were the right size.

For the original poster, windows XP supports the floppy drive, so if you get a 5.25 inch drive (still $19, on ebay) it can be attached with the cable on you motherboard. I vaguely remember that drive A: and drive B: had a few wires reversed, but also, you were able to use a 5.25 on drive A:.

To go USB, there are conversion devices from floppy drives to USB. http://search.ebay.com/usb-5-25-drive_W0QQcatrefZC6QQdfspZ32QQfromZR40QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsabfmtsZ1QQsacatZQ2d1QQsaobfmtsZinsifQQsatitleZusbQ205Q2e25Q20driveQQssPageNameZRC0021QQ_trksidZp1638Q2em120

Ask friends, family, etc. if they have an old computer with a 5.25" drive at home/work/school. If they can convert from 5.25" to 3.5", USB thumb drive, email attachment, etc. then the rest should be pretty easy.

Don't forget pawn shops and second-hand stores, they sometimes have old computers. And don't forget hamfests, they often have old electronics of all types.

Those drives are all over the place! We cannibalize them for the stepper motors for another application.

I can't believe that you can't find a bunch!

I'm confident you can make one work with Windows 2000XP as we found a pile of legacy data on 5.25" disks and needed to have it moved to a hard drive.

I am assuming,of course, that the data was loaded on a PC using an MS operating system, DOS and that the diskette was formatted accordingly.

Be aware that not all those disks stored data on both sides of the disk.

Be warned, there are actually 4 types of 5.25 disk drives.

You need a DSDD version, which will read all the lower densities.....unless you know 100% that the floppies are only single sided for example. (What is printed on the floppy cannot be believed by the way, single sided were often reformatted to double sided for example and usually worked fine!!

By the way, DSDD means Double Sided Double Density.

It is actually (except for size) very compatible to a 1.44 Mbyte 3.5 " Drive.....

You should be able to connect it to a normal (old) PC of 286 or 386 vintage.

It might be possible to make a cable up for a 3.5" drive, to accept the 5.25 drive....I have never attempted this personally though......old cables had both connectors already on them for both.....

This is all from memory, my apologies if any points are misleading, but I am pretty sure its all correct....

Best of luck......
