Another Cheap-Energy Holy Grail?

10/21/2008 12:25 PM

Blacklight Power says that they can knock the electron of a hydrogen atom into a lower energy state than the 1s orbital. Coming from a chemistry background this sounds to me like saying you can throw a noodle at the sky and have it bore through a concrete wall on the surface of Mars. It's not just that it's impossible, it simply doesn't fit into my view of the world. The resulting atom would be a smaller particle which Blacklight calls a hydrino. They claim that the resulting release in energy creates more than enough energy to create more hydrogen, which can then be forced into lower energy states to release more energy.

f true, it would be a cheap, clean way to create electricity from water. The problem is, the entire scientific establishment has rebelled against the idea and believes that Blacklight is run by con men.

But the story is a heck of a lot more interesting than that. Though scientists have almost universally denied Blacklight's claims, veteran investors have taken the bait. Michael Jordan, the former CEO of Westinghouse sits on the board as does the CFO of Credit Suisse and Blacklight has taken over $60 M in investment from mutual funds, utility companies and private investors

After reading the article do you think this is this another con. Or could they have discovered a cheap source of energy?

There are a couple of signs to look for whenever you run across something like this. No one of these is damming by itself; it's the sum of the warnings that should alert you.

They claim to have over-unity energy generation.

They claim to have unified the laws of physics.

Everybody else is wrong.

They have a new thingy that nobody else ever knew about.

They have "peer-reviewed papers" that aren't quite that.

They have their claims verified by an unknown professor at an obscure school.

At least one of the principals comes from a non-scientific background and thus offers new insight "outside the box".

It appears to me I have to smack these guys with the quote:

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

See previous threads on CR4 I have responded to regarding Blacklight.

Two words - "Another scam".

Sorry I didn't check archives before I posted. Didn't realize this was already discussed.

It just came up on a group I visit regularly so I did not know it was OLD NEWS.

That's alright. It pays to check the archives as many topics and developments have already been discussed in great depth.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Usually a good guide.

I don't pretend to be an expert in this area, but the 2nd law would seem to require that a hydrino would be a more stable state than hydrogen, as it requires energy to turn it to hydrogen and loses energy on reversal.

In this case there should be a steady build up of hydrinos in the environment, so simple examination of environmental hydrogen should show this.

As I understand it hydrinos have not, in fact, been observed.

This lack of natural hydrinos would seem to be a fatal flaw in Blacklights claims.

Technically, in conformance with Quantum Mechanics, it is possible to throw a noodle into the sky and have it bore through Mars. It is just very unlikely. Now a net positive energy gain by collapsing an electron in hydrogen to a energy state below 1s, a "hydrino", that seems really unlikely.
