USB problem

10/26/2008 5:36 AM

Just down loaded service pack 3 (XP), now my USB ports don't work, printer and memory sticks not recognised, anti virus and ad-ware programmes run, no problem found. Device manager states every thing is OK? Any suggestions.

Regards JD.

I had a similar problem restore to the last known working point by hitting f8 at boot up or use the restore function to go back to before you installed it. Then all you have to watch out for is it trying to reinstall itself. I used add or remove proggrammes to dump it and havent had a problem since. I have my automatic updates set to notify so that nothing can install itself.

Hello jdretired:

some good advice from coconutpete!

Have you tried inserting your USB stick then seeing what the device manager finds? I have not had this problem but, it may be that the USB needs updating. I assume you are using USB2 sticks and not some old ones which you may get get latency troubles with?

I cannot recall the size but, it may be possible to un-install the sp3xp and download it direct to memory-stick. Then go into into safe-mode and load it from your stick?

Just a thought. I know safe-mode has come to my rescue before. If you do try this keep enough systems working to be able to transfer from the memory stick. There is a choice of about 4 states I think.

Good luck...........

I had to relaod the driver from the disk that came with my computers after downloading the same thing. Just running the update did not work I had to use the orginal drivers off the setup disk.

You need a soft ware installation on your pc before everything can work well

The printer problem was a faulty USB port, the memory stick is something else. I'm on a different computer, both computers are Compaq desktops, the one I'm using has Vista, In both cases the memory stick does not work when plugged into a rear port, but works all right when plugged into a port at the front? I did not have this problem with the previous computer, it only happened after I down loaded the service 3 pack.

Hello jdretired:

that is weird. I had one of my two front usb port stop working. But, have really only used them for the last 10 months and cannot relate as to whether it was caused by SPXP3 or not. I do not need it anyway so just do not worry. It is odd that one port should work and the other doesn't though!

I hope to completely reinstall XP soon anyway. So maybe all will be straitened out then?

Good luck and let me/us know what you do and whet the outcome is OK?
