Vibration Monitoring System

10/27/2008 5:47 AM

Hello,

I am working on analysing the technical feasibility and the cost factors in applying vibration monitoring system, to monitor the condition of machines so that conditiion based maintenance can be implemented. Can anyone share any insights in these areas?

Hope to hear from you,

Matias

The modern approach is to use "power harvesters" for the supply of the accelerometer and conditioner and transmit wireless the data to a centralised reception, data saving and analysing device.

To make it efficient it is necessary to determine the FFT spectrum of OK system and after it compare results with it so that errors and their sources will be seen. Such analysis is used even in quality reception of so complex systems as engines and can determine if a gap under a valve is out of range and which one it is.

Hi,

one problem is that vibration is a mixture of deformation to be measured at a distance from the sources.

Another problem is that there are good bearings with high vibration level and bad bearings with low vibration level (sometimes, not the usual situation).

Next problem is that piezo-accelerometers measure (often) not only acceleration but also surface strain.

Despite these and other problems your intention is a good one and will give you a lot of insights. If your customers will pay for additional information is a question of intense discussion in any early situation.

We have a lot of good (tool life, bearing status, grinding process) and bad experience, if you like to be discussed in detail by email.

Hello RHABE

Thank you for your good openion on the vibration monitoring system as a condition monitoring way. I would love to hear more on it through mail too. So, have my e-mail ( matiastaye@yahoo.com) and i will be willing to hear from you soon.

Have a nice time

The more data the better, so an online system is better than a portable analyzer

An online system is much more expensive than a portable analyzer

One way or another a qualified individual needs to be looking at the data.

However the only interesting data to look at is on a machine with problems. Everything else is boring.

So if you can have a computer do the initial data analysis and flag the problems your qualified individual will stay engaged.

Make the right measurements to asses the condition of the machine, don't just blanket the equipment with accelerometers and assume you will get something meaningful.

Don't forget to measure performance parameters, vibration is not the only indicator of condition. Performance is as well.

Thank you Steve for the nice comments. i liked them.

Can you also comment on the financial consideration to be taken having a look at the overall organization's financial standing for a cost effective condition monitoring system application?

Thanks

Matias

There are many specialists already working on it that includes skf and several other like vibraquest (www.spectraquest.com) etc.

It all depends on the cost of breakdown - if the cost (not the bearing costs which any way need to be replaced - rather the loss due to breakdown- the extra down time vis a vis the cost associated with early detection and replacement) justifies the effort and the cost of the replacement then go ahead.

In fact skf, spectraquest etc claim that they provide sufficiently early signal along with the residual life so that the replacement can be done during the optimum shut down time and no additional down time is necessary.

If you are not making the condition monitoring product, i suggest you be in touch with specialists - provided your down time cost is high.

Dear sb.

Thank u so much for a balanced comment on the important financial considerations before applying a condition monitoring system.

I was wondering if you could find me a case study or an application doccument that visibly indicate the cost and financial considerations while applying a new system to an industry.

Thank u and hope to hear from you,

Matias
