Idetification code for electrical system

10/29/2008 10:44 AM

Hi,

I want to give an identification number/name for each item in each plant in our factory. (motors, solonoid valves, breakers, etc)

Please give me some kind of idea, to start it. It should be a standard method.

Thanks in advance.

Really I made my coding system by my self and it's functioning properly

I made the code as follows:

XX-XXX-XXX/specific item

for example:

EL-GNR-001-turbo charger ( electrical - generator-generator nuber 001/turbo charger)

another example:

EL-PMP-015/motor ( electrical-pump-pump #15/motor of the pump

or you cand machine name or abbreviation to the name or you can ad the cost center.

but in general try to keep the code as short as you can but also be sure any one can read it and understand it belonges to which item.

The problem with significant numbering systems is that it is very difficult to predefine a numbering system that is short but gives adequate detail and granularity to define the current inventory of items but more importantly, the future inventory. With the wide variety of components that you have described, you are going to end up with a very long significant numbering system with many null characters on most. This is a mistake that is quite common and is usually fairly expensive to change out of when it becomes too mistake prone (this will happen very rapidly) and unweildly.

My recommendation is to go to a non-significant numbering system and tie it into a database to get the details.

This has many advantages.

It is much easier to 'talk' a 4 or 6 digit number to a co-worker than it is a 25 character identifier. The mistake rate of assuming parts of the identifier is very high and can lead to costly mistakes.

it can be auto-IDed, using Bar-Codes or RFID. Bar-Coding can be relatively inexpensive. using simple numeric only barcode symbology, such as 2 of 5 allows very compact codes that are easily read and can be quite small or as large as you desire.

The database allows you to fully describe the item. it can include commodity codes, full descriptions, classifications groups, product families, electrical characteristics (such as voltage, current, power, frequency), manufacturer, manufactures part number, supplier, suppliers part number, cost, etc. it also allows you to maintain location information, quantities, etc. The database can be a purchased database or one you create in MS-Access, MYSQL, SQL, or any other data base you want to use. stay away from spreadsheets as they are too limiting.

Bar code labels can be very durable (of course there is a higher expensive involved with increased durabilty) or very inexpensive. There are some very good, inexpensive printers available to print bar code labels on demand.

Bar code scanners have really come a long way. the cost is dependent on the environmental conditions, the capabilty and method of communications to the database.

I've worked this problem from the perspective of an engineer (thought significant ID was the way to go) and from a quality, materials and inventory management persective. Unless the environment is a very small, 'mom & pop' operation, non-significant is the best way to go.

Hi jacojan! A nomenclature A.S.A. exists (AMERICAN ESTANDAR ASSOCIATION) CRADLE IN NUMBERS THAT INDICATE the FUNCTION OF the DEVICES OR EQUIPMENT, FOR EXAMPLE a RELAY OF INSTANTANEOUS SOBRECURRENT CORRESPONDS TO NUMBER 50, the PLANT CAN BE REFERRED ON THE BASIS OF an ACRONYM OF 3 OR 4 LETTERS, ADDING a LITERAL one TO IDENTIFY the RELATIVE POSITION, For example: 52 VEG 1 THAT WOULD BE one INTERRUPTING OF AC VOLTAGE OF THE PLANT VEGAS OF FEEDER 1

A previous plant where I worked had a two number system scheme.

Production had a letter/number ID for each of their systems and then a suffix for components dedicated to those systems. makes it easy to find where things go when re-assembling something. Kind of cumbersome if you have components of components

Facilities/QA/Metrology used and shared a separate scheme where each piece of equipment or component of significance was given a unique 6 digit number (bar code optional). This number linked into the databases and history for the part.

I really appreciate "os708090"s post #2 but have to add:

the blog / post fits better to "General Discussion" Group for info for all the members.

I developed a system for cataloguing & had a detailed document in my employers set-up; having wide spectrum of products.

Brief description is as under:

XXX XXXX XXXX XXXX ..... XXX XX

1 2 3 to n last last

but1

1. Department; Like Electronics; Electrical etc || or Main product Category like UPS; Inverters; Power Supplies etc

2. Main product Category like UPS; Inverters; Power Supplies etc || -- Or --

Major Equipment like "Inverter 220V 50Hz Battery-Powered"

3. Major Equipment like "Inverter 220V 50Hz Battery-Powered" || -- or --

Main Assembly like "Rectifier Assy"

4. Main Assembly like "Rectifier Assy" || -- or --

Sub-Assembly of "Rectifier Assy" like " Rectifier Module"

5. Sub-Assembly of "Rectifier Assy" like " Rectifier Module" || -- or --

Sub-Sub-Assy of " Rectifier Module" if any || -- or --

Components of " Rectifier Module"

.

.

.

Last but 1. Components of "Sub-Assembly" or "Sub-Sub-Sub-Assy" of the last level

Last. Version of Document or component

Examples:

NB:

1. The very 1st document should be details of "Idetification Codes" or "cataloguing" Procedure adopted by the Firm.

"Idetification Codes" or "Cataloguing" Procedures; Index; Templates for Documents; Lists; Tables;

etc be included in this section.

2. Also Common Assemblies; Components & Materials; etc etc be included to aviod duplication of documents

and in all catalogues refence be made to "Common" group.

3. The system can be extended or squeezed as desired.

4. The 1st section of each Main Section should be reserved for Documentation particular to the Section

including References only to related documents in "Common" Section.

000 000 000 ... 000 00 Introduction to the "Idetification Codes" or "cataloguing" & Documentation

010 000 000 ... 000 00 1st Department or group like "Electical Manufacturing Div"

010 010 000 ... 000 00 1st Production Group like "Generators" of "Electical Manufacturing Div"

010 010 010 ... 000 00 1st "Major Equipment" of "Generators" of "Electical Manufacturing Div"

like "Generator-Set 220KVA, 3 Ph, 110V, 60Hz"

010 010 010 010 ... 000 00 1st Major Assy of "Generator-Set 220KVA, 3 Ph, 110V, 60Hz"

like "Engine Assy" ...

.

010 010 010 010 ... 001 00 1st component Like "Sump cover" Ver: Basic of "sub-sub- .. Assy" like "Engine Block" of

"Engine Assy" like "Engine

010 010 010 010 ... 001 01 1st component Like "Sump cover" Ver: 01 of "sub-sub- .. Assy" like "Engine Block" of

"Engine Assy" like "Engine

I prefer only digits instead of mix of Alpha-numerics dut to sorting and search of Hard-Copies by Human is easy wrt

Alpha-numerics; we can easily put 8 beneath 7, difficult to find the place of N wrt Q.

However it depends how big a setup is & which system best fits the situation.

I recommend the small/medium setups to cater for their expansion to higher level.

The most important in ISO Approvals today is a good documention of Materials/ Processes.

Hope will be of any help !!!!

Hello,

Thanks for your valuable explanation.

I have made an identification as follows,

XX-XXX-XXX-XX-XXXXX/XX

Category-Plant-Item-Item no-Specification of the item

EL-C01-IMG-01-3P400/3k

Electrical-Crushing plant 1-Induction Motor with Gear box- motor no 1-Specification of the item (3phase 400V/3 kw.

ME-K01-PNA-02-XXXXX/XX

Mecanical-Kiln 1-Pneumatic actuator-specifications

I hope this will work for our factory.

Your further idias will welcome to improve this more.

Thank you.
