Substitute for Phenol Formaldehyde (Thermoset Plastic)

10/30/2008 1:03 PM

Hello friends.

Can you please suggest a thermoplastic thats can replace a thermoset plastic (phenol formaldehyde) part.

Application is for electrical terminal holder.

terminal voltage is 230VAC.

Max operating temp is 60Deg C.

Max temp rise observed is 65Deg C

Biggest concern is meltdown, and burn out protection in the condition of short circuit.

There are thermosetting polyesters that are used for plates and bowls and are microwaveable and dishwasher safe. They also have an appropriate hardness. I don't know about the electrical properties.

If you don't find something, I can ask my customer who does compression molding for the name of the manufacturer. If you need prototypes, that is a service that I can also provide.

PBT (Poly butylene terepthalate) or Polycarbonate already in the said use, which you ask for.

Grades most suitable for electrical application are already used by all major players in India

India makes replacement based on acetate thermoset polymeric material which performs better than Phenolic Formaldehyde. Its use temperature is less than200C and is only draw back I have seen.

The company who makes this is in Chennai India and name of the Company is Global Applied Materials. The product is syringe dispensible type which we have and have with varying dielectric constant and they have this with dielectric as well as conductor paste. If any one needs I can provide further information
