Food Processing Equipment Engineer

10/12/2006 1:44 PM

I am trying to network with some of the top engineering managers that have worked with the manufacturing of food processing equipment. Does anyone know someone with experience in this industry, preferably near Michigan?

Having someone with Food Process Equipment manufacturing experience is using a pretty wide paint brush, Could you be more specific in what area.

Manufacturing or Design

- Bakery

- Vegetable

- Dairy which could be broken down into ice cream, butter, cheese and fluid milk

- Bottling or packaging

On top of this, what type of process, Cooking, Filtration/clarification/Fracturization, mixing/blending, etc.....

Ideally, a background in the food industry specifically dealing with the manufacturing of ingredient feed systems including weighing, batching and blending.

To whom it might concern:

I am in mpls and getting in with engineering firms can be very tough. Finding them is not so hard.

Some of the engineering firms I called on already had strong relationships with a lot of equipment manufacturers. In some cases the only way to break in was to wait for a manufacturer to make a critical mistake or take on the more difficult projects that none of the other equipment manufacturers didn't want to take. The second option can be very risky if you don't have experience or technology to deal with there problems.

Once you do get specified, it is very rewarding. It is a lot of fun listening to all those messages on your voicemail from people who want quotes. Most of these people you probably called on before and they wouldn't pee on you if you were on fire. Now you are there best friend.

There is a society of process engineering firms available on the web. You can pick from various engineering disciplines and by state or region. I can't remember the site address right now, but give me a call. I could search it out for you and give you the address.

One thing to be carefull about is some of these firms might be working on projects that are in different states. If you are an equipment manufacturer, this is nothing to be concerned about, but if you are a manufacturing representative with a territorial agreement, there could be trouble. You might already know that engineering firms seldomly issue purchase orders and it could be a case of who and where was the order issued or delivered that might determine which representative gets a commission. It might not be you.

Call me anytime, I would like to learn more about what you make or sell. Perhaps we can help each other out.
