remote lighting

11/02/2008 9:41 PM

I need to control remotely some big floodlights from approx. 4000 ft. Is this possible and what sort of senders and receivers do I need if it is? Any help or recommendations are certainly appreciated.....Thanks ,

brushybill,

You can do as you propose very inexpensively with a wired RS-422 link or one of several wireless links and an I/O rack. Follow this link: http://www.bb-elec.com/

Before answering your question, we need to know what control system your lights are using. Then we can advise on the type of link needed. For example if your lights are DMX controllable (the protocol universally used in the theatrical and staging worlds) then there are a range of long cable drivers, wireless links, DMX to Ethernet converters etc. If your lighting system is coming from the architectural or industrial world then other protocols will be used. There are potentially any number of solutions to this.

It really depends on how you want to control them. If it is just an ON OFF function then a wireless uhf link and a contactor will do the job. if you wish to get more compex then look at a commercially available scada system. These are available from a number of companies including this one www.abbey.co.nz or Just google scada systems.

Yes, it's just on and off, the lights are realitively simple 110 v floods from a ship. I really appreciate your help and info..

4000 ft away! this is some distance, I hope that your lights are aimed to illuminate only your property and not shine in the eyes of people not on your property. There are far too many cases of badly aimed lights.

It's a giant ranch with no close neighbors and they only spot an American flag so no complaints so far,, Thanks

I have had good success at long distances using zigbee pro devices. Communications have been good at over 1200 yards, but I don't know if the initial cost (development board etc) would outweigh the benefits.
