Specifications for building a sheet machine rolling machine

11/02/2008 10:44 PM

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can tell me how to build a sheet metal rolling machine.

The minimum gauge of sheets to be rolled is 0.47mm and the maximum rolling gauge is 1.6m.

The sheet metal used for rolling will be Zinc Coated Sheet - ZC, Galvanized Sheet - GI, Stainless Steel Sheet - SS or Aluminum sheets.

The machine should be able to roll sheets to maximum 18" in length.

The minimum diameter of the rolled sheet should be to 2" tubes. Maximum should be any diameter.

If anyone has built a rolling machine, I would appreciate having the detailed specifications of same.

Thanks again.

A valuable resource for most "home built" projects of a machine shop nature.

May I SUGGEST :

--------------

Write Tech English.: To roll Galvanized Steel sheet thk. 0.47<t<1.6 mm to dia n<Φ<m mtr. and length x<L<y mtr.

----------------

And post again:

Best

I did a great deal of research on these machines which are generally referred to as a Slip Roll machine. The do-it-yourself plans that can be purchased are poor designs in my opinion.

I even acquired some substantial round stainless steel stock after having designed a complete Slip Roll machine in a popular 3D modeling software.

In the final analysis, I found it more economical to simply buy one on e-Bay. Mine has a 24" wide frame and will turn pieces as tight as 1.75 inches in diameter. Delivered price with freight was $175. When you consider how heavy they are and the affect on shipping costs, that wasn't a bad deal.

Given how inexpensive they are, especially used ones in the size you specified, you are far better of, in my opinion, to buy one. Mine was not made in Asia, oddly enough, but came from a European country and is sized in metric.

The sheet metal does not seem to care!

Please check this out,

I fully realize that all personnel preferences differ, but if you figure what your time is worth. You'll probably opt toward simply purchasing one.

I hope this helps somewhat, but if you REALY need to build one. I have seen the blue model above built many times in Mexico in small shops, they sometimes use heavy gauge pipe instead of solid stock rollers, Sprockets and Chains in place of gears, the list goes on and on.

The two bottom rollers are driven by the crank handle and the top roller adjusts to the size of the roll you want. Obviously the model above is built with 2" rollers, offering the ability to roll 2". Normally you have the means of disconnecting the top roller to remove your piece when finished.

I would be interested in the Shear, Break, and Roller machine if I personally needed to build some stuff as a project or hobby. Pretty cool gadget for 500.00.

I agree with Tim. I've seen similar machines sold at Harbour Freight individually and also as combination devices, for low prices as well.

As a general rule, however, I avoid complex offshore built machines for two reasons:

1. Timely availability of replacement parts, particularly those that are machine specific. Lathes, milling machines, etc are not the kinds of equipment I trust for parts when made offshore. Finding replacements from other makes rarely works and costs a lot of time.

2. You can often purchase a much better, well made, domestic machine used for less money than a new off shore equivalent.

If you check out Slip Roll machines on eBaY, you'll likely see that as well as for other equipment.

Crank driven Slip Roll machines are fairly simple devices and while parts are not likely readily available for them from off shore, the probability of anything failing that can't be fixed or replaced is remote. You have to factor in the value of your time and what it costs you in lost production if this is for a manufacturing environment.

If that is the case, then a definitely urge you to buy a well made, used machine.
