Synthetic Ice as a Skating Surface

11/04/2008 3:13 PM

Looking for comments on the use of synthetic ice as a surface for a public, outdoor skating rink.

In particular: durability, maintenance, skatability, operating cost vs. natural ice.

Current cost for four month operation of our outdoor municipal rink is $25,000. This is utility cost only for 2 X 50 HP recip. freon compressors, 1 X 15 HP brine pump, 2 X 10HP condenser fans. Does not include personnel hours for installation, removal and maintenance.

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that might work would be buckyballs, or fullerenes. If the rink sees a lot of use, you need a substance that will withstand the load and still allow the skaters to glide. Fullerenes are about the only things that can retain their structure like that, AFIK.

Ontario Place in Toronto had a synthetic skating surface way back. It was like skating on a large plastic cutting board.
