Deodorizing your "skunked" pet

11/08/2008 6:41 PM

We let our dog Sagan (Named for Carl, the dog's a genius) out the other night and he managed to get sprayed by a skunk. (I said the dog's a genius; I didn't say his eyesight was perfect!)

It was 9:30 pm. The pet stores were closed. We knew the "tomato juice and lemon juice and salt treatments" wouldn't work (Since when do acidic solutions dissolve organics? Need alkaline cleaners to lift organic soils- chemistry 101).

We could have tried a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda application, but that didn't seem to be the best we could come up with.

Heres what we did:

1) rubbed him down with gojo hand cleaner from the shop ( not the kind with pumice!)

rinsed him off

2) applied gojo again

3) used a dog shampoo available at the local discount drugmart (open til 10:00 Pm)called Nilodor.

4) threw away his collar and soaked his "bling" (rabies tag,dog license) in gasoline.

5) bought new spring rings to attach them to his new collar.

Only one trip to the tub, smells gone, and skin not irritated from harsh solvents; no perfumes.

My colleague at work had tried the tomato juice thing on his dog a few months ago- after three tries he gave up and took his dog to a groomer.- that dog was well scrubbed and waterlogged.

Gojo; nilodor shampoo- worked in one try.

It works. Tomato juice doesn't.

My advice to dog owners- keep these products at hand "just in case."

Milo, looks like you've covered all the basses. Having been there, you've done everything thing I would have done, and that works. My 2 boneheads have developed a very healthy respect for the stinky ones. I had a skunk problem last summer, here's my thread,

Even after this happened, the dogs knew enough to leave it alone.

Nice - I like your combination. I use my base as Dawn dish soap. Since skunk spray is oil based this seems to separate the skunk oil off the dogs skin and coat.

For another problem we dog owners have the occasional diarrhea – use canned pumpkin. This is a standard at dog shows when dogs get nervous and their bowels become loose. It works well and is good for them too. On puppies first week home we use yogurt and priobiotics.

my daughter has been giving that canned pumpkin to her cat for anti hairball treatment. Thanks for the tip for the canine application.

That was probably rhetorical,

but to remove porcupine quills first cut off the non pointy end. The quill will extract easier but some times they are to deep and have to be pulled through.

Lots of porcupines back home. Farm dogs are notorious for trying to run them off.

Badgers too but they soon learn even though they can run faster just leave them both be, unless they come to the yard.
