Forbes List of Worst Cars

05/21/2005 7:13 AM

What are the worst cars in history? Here is Forbes' List. Anyone own any of these clunkers?

AMC's Pacer
Chevy Vega
Citroën SM
Fiat Strada
Ford Bronco II
Ford Edsel
Ford Pinto
Honda Accord Hatchback
Mazda RX-2
Oldsmobile Delta 88
Pontiac Fiero
Renault Dauphine
Sachsenring Trabant P50
Yugo GV

To be honest the Edsel was a marketing failure, not an engineering failure. Cars that didn't make the list were Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire which both received 1 star crash ratings.

Ford Bronco II

I have owned two of them, both 86's and I loved them. They were both 4x4's and dependable, and fuel injected, eliminating off camber stalls, although a bit underpowered. The advantages outweighed everything else. They were equivalent to a Jeep only with better air conditioning, electric windows, cruise control and a better ride quality. They had a very tight turning radius making them a lot more manuverable in the woods. They could seat 4 adults with plenty dry secure cargo space behind the rear seats. My 2 year old son (at the time) and I put many miles on one of them on muddy back roads while I was in college.

I'm surprised by this selection as well. A buddy of mine in high school had one, which took a heck of a beating from inexperienced drivers and rough terrain, yet always kept going. The body gave out before the engine (due to a number of minor and one major accident). I think he had close to 130,000 miles on it.

Does AMC Hornet count?

05/23/2005 11:56 AM

My Dad had a singular talent in the 1970 and early 80s to buy the worst car on the lot. The two worst: The AMC Hornet - It was lime green with green and white checkerboard seats. After a few years of less than dependable service, it died in front of a junk yard. Plymouth Reliant K station wagon. No, Lee "K" did not stand for quality, it stood for crap.

We used to have an Aries K car when I was growing up. Olive Drab and looked like a tank. I used to think the K stood for K-mart, where I thought we bought the car.

With the exception of a rear quarter impact that the Enzo demonstrated, Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, Masarati, and, out in my garage, a Pantera (1972), all would find the driver looking up under the floorpan of anything that hit them. At 42" tall, the only thing not to worry about is roll-over, unless you find a curb while sliding. A center of gravity about 15" off of the roadway doesn't flip. I think even a pinto, or a corvair (where's that on the list?) could well be considered safer around other drivers.

I needed to get a hobby.
