Maintenance Supervisor

11/10/2008 2:24 PM

How is vegetable oil hydrogenated? what are the equipments and materials needed to go about it? what are the steps to go about it? I'm thanking about making my own hydrogenated vegetable oil from raw vegetable oil that I will use as fuel to be burned in a boiler that will inturn power a steam engine.

Usually by bubbling hydrogen gas through hot vegetable oil in the presence of a nickel catalyst. By why not just burn the vegetable oil itself directly? Hydrogenated oil tends to coagulate when cold. Alternately, why not trans-esterify the oil to form biodiesel instead.

Thanks for the comment. It is very good.

I'm from a poor country that has a tree that produces seed that is rich in oil that is not used for anything. I'm thinking of processing the seed to get the oil that I will in turn process the oil with hydrogen that will be used as fuel to be burned in a steam boiler to run a steam engine. It is impossible to get vegetable oil there because it is used for food.

The trees I'm talking about are plentiful and I believe the oil from them can be processed and used as fuel.

I know that hydrogenated oil will coagulate when cold. Don't you think if I heat the hydrogenated oil before burning it in the steam boiler will work?

I believe that hydrogenated oil has more energy then trans-esterify oil. I will anyway try the trans-esterify oil. My problem will be the equipments and chemicals that will be needed to trans-esterify the oil.

Hmmm... How did you come up to turn Hydrogenated Vege oil into Fuel?????? Do know what is the real purpose of Hydrogenated Vegetable oil?

One of the main purpose is to mix this product in soap factory..... Are you working in Vege oil refinery? how long?

I have build Hydrogenation plant & Fractionation Plant for Vege Oil Company.

hydrogen and nickel as a catalyst

be aware: the reaction is exotherm... and becomes incontrolable from 200°C+, furthermore, the energy needed to ignite a hydrogen gas or mixture is very, very low and the explosion limits are very wide...

Hello Kilomark,

"How is vegetable oil hydrogenated?"

Hope you are not thinking that the vegetable oil, by 'hydrogenation' becomes 'hydrocarbon'. Even other wise also it a hydrocarbon, may be plus some other ingradiands....

What I'm thinking about is that when vegetable oil when hydrogenated can be used as fuel to be burned in a steam boiler to run a steam engine. What do you think? If I filter the oil before been hydrogenated, Will it not work?

Thanks for the comment.

I'm aware of the reaction. What if I heat the oil to about 100°C and vacuum the container that the oil is in and them introduce the hydrogen little by little until the vacuumed space is full with the hydrogen gas?

I know that the process of mixing the oil with the hydrogen gas using nickel as catalyst will produce heat. If I had a way to keep the temperature at 100°C until the process is done, will it work?

There is no need to hydrogenate vegetable oil prior to its combustion. The compression-ignition engine was originally developed to use vegetable oil as a fuel. Then the dino-fuels peddlars got involved......

As the matter of fact I'm thinking of using the vegetable oil in a steam boiler as fuel. I believe that hydrogenated oil will have more energy for this steam boiler. Don't you think it will not work?
