Honda CRV 2.2 MODLE 2008

11/16/2008 5:27 AM

Hello CR4 Crew

2008 Honda CRV 2.2 diesel parked at Gatwick airport for 13 days. Battery completely flat on return! I am in no doubt that the battery was fully charged when left and I know that nothing was left on (other than the alarm which cannot be disengaged). Dealer has checked battery and normal background usage and has said there he can find no problem.
I maintain that you should be able to leave a car for 3 or even 4 weeks without problems so I don't understand what has happened here (I am also annoyed at my dealers lack of interest in my problem - particularly given the amount of money paid for the car).

Any ideas on what my problem might be? The only thing that I can think of is that the alarm is overly sensitive and that it was going off frequentl

turn off all known loads.

disconnect one terminal of the battery and connect an ammeter is series. That will tell you if amps are flowing. 1 amp flattens a battery in 2 days as most batteries are 50 amp hour.

If the current is smaller, it takes longer.

so 1/10 amp = 20 days.

It is quite possible the security system is the problem.

solution, a solar charger that provides an amp in a window that sees the sun when you park.

Interior lights left on can flatten a battery very fast and its very easy to miss that they have been left on!

Two good answers here. First confirm that the problem still exists, although that may require a little ingenuity as the battery needs to be accessed by opening the bonnet which may trigger activity in the alarm circuit. A basic multimeter - Maplin £6.99 - will diagnose stage one.

We have worked for 20 years on all sorts of cars and vans, and I agree that the first place to look is the boot light, and then the second is the light in the glove box. A 5 watt bulb at 12volts will flatten a battery in 150 hrs.

Good luck

If it's a light left on, and it has happened with me more
than once, it's usually the passenger compartment light,
and it is more easily seen at night. (strangely.)

After leaving the car, return when dark (or later after leaving)
and you'll probably kick yourself for not spotting it sooner!

Obvious true; but assumption is the mother of all cock-ups.

...and do not forget the glove compartment light if you have one.....

Be carefully when measuring the current with an ammeter as when you disconnect and reconnect, some values may get lost. Radio code for example. So make sure that you will not be causing further problems by disconnecting the battery......

I had exactly the same problem with my 'C class' M-B a few years ago - it happened twice, and eventually M-B diagnosed a faulty 'black-box' (no, not the battery!) in the engine compartment, since when the car has been fine for 6 years.

The alarm could be the culprit.

I know with some alarms that have more features such as motion detection and proximity sensors will draw power and drain batteries.

I disable the proximity sensors and motion detector when I park my vehicle for extended periods (more then a couple days). If I don't the battery gets run down.

hello aburani,

Curious last month at airport parking I noticed alarms sounding off as shuttle vans passed by. I suppose the parking lot was built on fill and the van is heavy enough to trigger a minor localized seismic event.

The lights flash or stay on for 3 minutes while the horn toots every time the battery may discharge.

Aburani,

The current draw check is something you should do.

My boss has a BMW which did the same thing.

I did a current check and found 1 amp draw with the car parked like yours.

It turned out that a circuit in the car was malfunctioning.

The dealer never did tell us what was the real problem but fixed it.

On the issue of the Honda CRV 2008. I bought a CRV 2.0 2008 three weeks ago.

Does anyone on this site have access to the maintenance manual.

With my engineering background in instrumentation and controls , it would be interested reading for me.

Please feel freee to direct me to any site which can help.

Regards,

Is there a chance they sold you a new car with a old battery ? Steam cleaning a battery and a little spray paint can fool anyone.

Hi

I have a 2007 Honda CR-V CTDi 2.2 , the car has problem with recurring flat battery. Last year 2008, it has been at Honda dealer/garage 3 times and Honda people could't find some thing wrong with the car, they just changed the battery, but it did not help. Unitll now in this year 2009, battery was flat again tree times and the Honda garage will have the car again on 2th. mars. 2009.

I saw may have flat battery problem with 2.2 CTDi -Honda Civic and most of them the problem was fault of software: http://www.civinfo.com/forum/bugs-faults-irritations/2993-2-2-cdti-ex-recurring-flat-battery-20.html

One of these once got left for 3 weeks in sub-zero conditions during the end of year holidays 2010-2011 covered with snow. On return it started first time.
