The one referred to in the membrane manufacturer's instructions.

Do not use anything involving chlorine. Bye-bye membrane......

Yes. The manufacturer's technical assistance is always the first port of call, because:

  • The membranes may be under Warranty.
  • The membranes may have been operated otherwise than in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • The membranes may be in service producing water intended for human consumption, and to introduce a cleaning agent that is not compatible with this duty is inviting serious problems, both for the membrane and the downstream consumer(s). It is good policy to keep the manufacturer involved because of this.

Filter water thoroughly.

Disinfect with UV but not exposed to air. You need to avoid ozone generation in this case as it degrades most materials.

The disinfection achieved here has no residual but that shouldn't be needed.

After the reverse osmosis, chlorine is usually the best compromise re cost and residual life.

If you don't want to use chlorine or bromine based materials, UV generated ozone is OK but the residual time is fairly short.

Residual is important because most distribution systems reinfect the water before it gets to the end user.
