PEES

Go through NFPA 72.

For a start please note that it is assumed that the detectors are to be provided for a building. Principally the following factors govern the spacing between the detectors:

- Height of the roof/ cavity (in case of false floor and false ceiling)

- No of air changes inside the area

Now a days multi criteria detectors are available . These detectors can be tuned to act as ionisation type, photoelectric type of heat type of detectors.

Remember that it is recommended to have an equal no. of ionisation and photoelectric detectors in a given area. Heat detectors are normally used where presence of gas during normal operation will cause malfunctioning of the detectors, eg in battery room.

Then their are other types of detectors suitable for various locations and applications.

Hope that gives you a goahead for further study.

Welcome aboard! The answer depends on which country the work is done in. You already have responses citing NFPA (American) and British standards, and an offer of help from India, I'm sure there are others. All will be similar, none are guaranteed to be identical, and it's the little details that you need to be aware of. Knowing where you are working is critical...
