Pressure Vessel Material

11/21/2008 8:10 AM

Gents,

We are going fabricate a Pressure Vessel (sort of gas cylinder) having Diameter 21Inch & length of 10.5 feet with both side dishends. Test pressure is approx.3500 psig.

The requirement is as below:-

Mechanical properties:

Standard codes Models of steel tubes Tensite strength(MPa) Yield strength(MPa) Yield ration Elongation(%) Absorbed-in-fracture energy(J) Hardness
Q/321088HGB3 4130X 725~865 485~735 ≤0.85 ≥20 -40℃≥40 195~269HB

Chemical composition:

Standard codes Models of steel tubes Chemical compositions(%)
C Si Mn P S Cr Ni Cu Mo V
Q/321088HGB3 4130X 0.25~0.35 0.15~0.35 0.40~0.90 ≤0.020 ≤0.010 0.80~1.10 ≤0.25 ≤0.20 0.15~0.25 ≤0.08

Can anyone suggest Substitute of material (as 4130X is not available in Bombay/India) in seamless pipe of ASTM / API / ISO / Indian Standard????

In seamless pipe terms, the some similar specs are ASTM A519 and GB18248.

But a replacement for 4130X itself? Something like AFNOR 30CD4 or DIN 25CrMo4, but with restrictions to elongation and toughness. ASTM A714 is intended for seamless tubing also, some grade under API 5L. All under tight tolerances.

I'm affraid there may be not an exact replacement one, you'll have to make some research and contact suppliers to check if they can meet your specs.

But maybe some other guy around here have some better information.

You need to add in to the information any temperature and temperature range descriptions. At the pressure indictated, I would buy american. You must have real quality control for something that could be a liability problem.

Please search the specs of API 5L Gr. X52 or X60 with various Wall thickness. Or maybe ASTM 516 Gr.70 in various wall thickness. Pressure vessel handbook will show some standard tables of steel properties, limitations and standard specs.

3500 psig test pressure is almost the same as on the well head OP and cross country pipeline test pressure.

regards

For a pressure vessel material, fracture toughness and corrossion resistance too are of utmost importance besides UTS. Strength of 4130 is less than that of 15CDV6 steel. This is produced by Midhani in Hyderabad. But its corossion resistance is of suspect unless protective coatings are given. However, if cost is not a limit, nothing like Ti6Al4V - a Titanium alloy well understood and weldable. It's strength (UTS) is 1000-MPa. Companies like Titanium Equipment and Anode Mfg Co (TEAM) in Chennai or Titanium and Tantalum (also in Chennai) are capable of end to end solution. But it may not be made of seamless pipe. With Aircraft builders in doldrums, this material should be easily available from abroad.

3500 psig is equivalent to about 241 bar. The proof pressure should at least be 360-bar. and burst pressure 500-bar or more. The wall thickness should be at least 14-mm if ID is 21". This applies to even 15CDV6 steel since this too has similar strength if heat treated. Since it is for storage of gas under high pressure, better to use Titanium. Its density is 3/4th of steel. But the Cost! Could be highly prohibitive.

I am doing a similar search for equivalent materials to 4130X but specifically for materials which are compatible with Hydrogen gas. Out of curiosity what is the gas that will be in your pressure vessel?

I may be able to provide you with some information about several materials which are similar to 4130X. My company e-mail might be quicker to get a response back to you. Douglas_Hunter@PlugPower.com
