Transformer Earthing

12/01/2008 8:12 AM

We have a 12.5MVA transformer. It is a old transformer. In the SLD there is a 3.5K Ohms resister is there with transformer grounding. Please suggest that whether this is a solidly earthing or resistive earthing? because depend on the earthing, we have to install the P127 (Directional earthfault relay).

Hello : Assuming that your SLD ( single line diagram) shows your transformer as a delta primary- wye secondary with the resistor in the neutral connection to earth, then , yes, this would be considered a rssistance earthed secondary system. If you have the secondary voltage rating ( line-to-line) then you can take the line-to-neutral voltage and divide it by the resistance and obtain the earth fault current ( line-to-neutral) that would flow thru the resistor.

Mr Mohanty,

Pls confirm whether the primary is DELTA & the secondary is STAR ?

In case the secondary is STAR then you have to connect the NGR at the neutral point. The secondary phase voltage devided by the NGR resistance will give you the maximum earth fault current.
