Instrument (Transmitter) Response Time

10/19/2006 10:46 AM

On several pressure transmitter documentation, we could read the dead time and time constant of the transmitter.

But when we speak about the "respons time" of the transmitter what is the definition of this term?

Is it the time to reach 99% of the measure (so it would be the dead time +5x time constant).

Is there any standard that define teh respons time of a transmitter?

The manufacturer's use specmanship to make their product better sounding than their competitors.

To accurately assess a product you will have to spend time normalising the data in the spec sheets and comparing the different manufacturers devices....

Not an easy task!

The standard response time should be the output change between the 10% and the 90% of the final value to be read... but this can be modified to read whats best for the manufacturer to sell...

My experience is that time constant and resposes time are often confused in spec sheets, when is is critical I always verify with the company engineers.

I have seen response time = time constant, response time = 3 x time constant, response time = 5 x time constant.
