Are VFD's Green Friendly?

12/05/2008 9:45 AM

Hello,

I am taking a course on "Manufacturing Green" where I am writing a class paper on Variable Frequency Drives "VFD's". Can I get some information on why someone would want to use VFD's? What industries are using VFD's and what benefits will be gained by utilizing them? What types of applications best fit VFD'S?

Thank you for time and assistance!

Google VFD see what applications come up. I'm sure the manufacture can tell you the benefits of using a VFD. I am sure if one of them is green it will be included in their sales pitch.

hi ..

frequeny controls the real or the active power.

so in order to change or control your real power you need to control your frequency,, thats the use of a variable frequency drive.

and reactive power is controlled by voltage and there u need VVD variable voltage drives..

and i am not sure about the green part it..

depends on the type of control you use for controlling the final flow of fuel in to your turbine or whtever prime mover..

did you ever "feather the gas pedal" while driving?

Thats kinda what a vfd does by cutting back electricity to motor when it and its load are running at full speed, and it doesn;t need the additional energy.

because it matches the energy to the load, rather than let everything run balls out, the vfd allows less energy to be used than without it. some VFD's can save as much as half the electricity used by better load management.

In most places, saving fifty percent of the energy to do the same amount of work would be considered "green..."

I have seen them installed on big pumps, for industrial cooling as well as fans. We didn't have them on my drawbenches or cranes or conveyors. I don't think.

Good luck with your studies.

Hey sparky, where can I get a green smiley face?

This will be an interesting topic in class when "green" has variable meanings........... since the earth has been in a cooling trend for many years now.

I think any way you look at....... if using VFD's could be a gain ..........no matter what the reason........... as long as it is cost effective for the business................. meaning profitable. I say go for it.

Now if it's "green", just for the sake of making a profit for using such a word....................... well, that's a different class, brobablyt taught by an old vice president with an ego and a following.

I am not an electrical guru bt any sense, but I found this on a quick google search,

http://www.vincentcorp.com/tech_papers/vfds_4_dummies.html

I hope this link helps you some.

Efficiency has many meanings, but green usually has just one.

Hi there

Try here

http://www.siemens.com/energysaving

for information re Siemens drives and a small programme that evaluates possible energy savings in different applications.

If you are more technically orientated, Schneider have a Cahier's paper on VFDs here:

http://www.schneider-electric.com/corporate/en/products-services/technical-publications/technical-publication-knowhow.page?c_filepath=/templatedata/Content/Technical_Publication/data/en/shared/automation/automation-information-networks/ect208.xml

Best of luck now.
