Hello preetamapaul:

How does the IC 4017 work?

(Please bear with me on the first Paragraph), and all will become clear.

This IC, is the 4017 decade counter/divider.

The 4017 takes a clock pulse in and then steps the output from negative to positive in a series of ten steps, with only one pin being on at a time. It has the unique capability of counting up to a certain number and then restarting the count, counting up to a certain number and halting, or it can be cascaded to more 4017's for a higher count.

The outputs are labeled 0 through 9. It can sink about 10 ma. of current per pin and is a very versatile IC. It operates from 3 VDC. to 15 VDC.

Do a Google search and in parenthesis type in, "LM4017". You'll be rewarded with all kinds of technical info which you can download and print.

LM4017 Statistics. This statistical tool is designed to help find alternative / replacement part numbers. It displays the top searches for LM4017 and other parts the user searched for within 24 hours.

How this tool works: This tool helps users correct part numbers, for example, common mistakes such as a user entering a "1Pxxxx" part number as "IPxxxx".

Another example would be a user entering a "02LIxxx" part number as "o2LIxxx", or "2SCxxx" part number as "Cxxx. It is also useful for suggesting alternatives. For example a search for "2N2222" shows KSP2222, Q2N2222, MBT2222, PN2222A, PS2222A, SP2222A as possible alternatives. I hope this is clear enough.

It is a pretty basic and useful logistical system tool.

Please let me know if this was helpful..........

Take care and good luck..............

A decade counter is a 4 bit counter which counts from 0000 (0 decimal) to 1001 (9 decimal). When a 1001 output is detected, the counter is side loaded with 0000 (on the next clock) rather than counting to 1010 (10 decimal).

With the 4017, they got tricky and decoded each state of the counter output to one of 10 output pins (0 through 9) using a bunch of gates.

In the olden days, we had to do this with 2 chips... a 74LS160 (or 162) for the decade counter, and 74LS138 (I think) to do the decoding. I don't have my books handy so I can't guarantee the LS138.

Hope this helps

Bill
