How Do I make DCAC Inverter

12/06/2008 3:01 AM

Hello every one, I am new in this forum, I am an electronic hobbyist.

I need some help from anybody about DIY an Inverter. I have an old model colt and I want to fix some electrical device. I need a schematic diagram of 1500 W DCAC inverter with explanation and procedure.

Any help from anybody is highly appreciated.

God bless to all.

Hello brainSeeker

Your <"....old model colt...."> Advise what that "colt" actually is, please.

Please note the http://otherpower.com/rectifier.html weblink above is a rectifier system, not the DC to AC Inverter you asked about.

Are you intending to make a DC to AC Inverter of 1500 watts capacity? If you are please be aware that these days it is cheaper to purchase a new Inverter than it is to purchase all the parts, then assemble it yourself.

If you are intending to build a 1500 Watt DC to AC inverter you would need to know the following:

  1. DC Voltage input
  2. AC Voltage output
  3. AC Output frequency
  4. AC Output waveform: Square Wave, Sine Wave

Reply here, with

Kind Regards....

Hello every one, I've mentioned a colt mitsubishi vehicle 1993 model. Thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks and regards.

Please answer Sparkstation's questions so that he and/or others can assist you better and further.

Making such a unit can be "deadly" interesting as the output could put you in a morgue, so unless you are a relatively experienced high voltage trained person, I can only say DON'T!!! Leave well alone.....

If you just need mains voltage from a car battery while on the move, as already mentioned, go out and buy one, the parts alone will cost far more than a finished unit with full guarantee.......

Remember also that a normal car battery will not supply voltage for long, work out the powers involved using simple Ohm's Law and you could just make your car unstartable while miles away from civilization!!! So keep a wary eye on the battery's output voltage! or make sure that you have some sort of low voltage alarm in use, that warns you before the battery is empty! Some units have such a circuit already built in.

Remember also that normal car batteries deteriote quickly if heavily discharged, as they were not designed for such usage. A Leisure battery will handle that much much better and can be "Parallel-Charged" from the car's engine (while underway) with little trouble and will of course protect the car's battery from being discharged at the same time......

Remember that cheap home chargers should only be used to charge till a battery is "full", leaving the charger on after that point will just damage the battery and your electricity bill. Best is a unit that charges only to say 13.4 volts and then goes into a charge retension mode with just a trickle of voltage....

If you buy an invverter unit, only buy one large enough to supply the power needed, oversizing will just empty the battery quicker for no reason, unless the efficiency is very very high.....then its also more expensive....

Remember that some electronics do not like the pseudo sine waves produced by many (still good) units, PCs may just go completely haywire for example. Ones producing a technically correct sine wave are expensive and often less efficient, therefore they empty the battery even quicker.......

Think though the whole process before starting to invest money!!! It will save you accidents, high costs and dissapointments, let alone your life......

You gonna pull 1500 Watts from a car battery ??
1500 Watts AC or DC, it doesn't matter. I guess that the electric system in your car is 12 Volts, yes? So, for "generating" 1500 W, you'll need 1500/12= 125 Amps...
125 Amps ... you have any idea what this is ? This is about the Amps you need to START you Colt. This means your battery+generator should be able to START your car constantly ...

It seems that not many people know that "making" power out of nothing is not invented yet. (please let me know ASAP if this happens one day...)

1500 Watts stays 1500 Watts, no matter how many times you convert it from DC to AC, no matter how many times you transform it, no matter how many times you rectify or no matter how, or how many times you convert it from one unit to another... if you need 1500 Watts in any form, you'll need at least 1500 Watts to start. You'll ALWAYS need more to start, because of losses during "transformation, but let's keep it theoretical for just now ...
