Facebook - Language

12/06/2008 2:53 AM

I do not use facebook, however my wife does sometimes. She has been using it for a while and just recently it decided that she is Chinese. If I type in facebook.com it automatically changes to zh-cn.facebook.com and the whole site is then obviously in Chinese. I have fiddled around for hours but had no success at correcting this. (Using windows Explorer).

Any suggestions would be welcome?

Do your settings in Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options look OK?

By the way I am physically in China at present, but that has never been a problem before.

I know nothing about facebook, but I imagine that there's a cookie somewhere on your machine that contains user information.

Maybe deleting cookies will fix it?

I guess you are right, but I have done the usual delete All - cookies, temp files etc (Vista). Not sure where else to look.

Only other things I can think of are:

1. Re-install Explorer

2. Contact your ISP to see if they're interfering

3. Try logging onto facebook from another PC

4. Learn Mandarin Chinese fast!

'Fraid that about does it for me - good luck!

[BTW - my 12yo daughter's learning Mandarin, & hopes to visit with the school next Easter]

The Chinese government only allows certain proprietary versions of commercial internet software to be available to their citizens for national security reasons. Your problem may not be fixable for this reason.

Hi The Prof

I think it may be caused by the default keyboard / char set driver downloaded for Chinese whenever they log on.

I have a similar problem. I use a 7¨ Asus for internet while I am working in the bed. (recovering from op)

There must be a hot key for switching between characters and trees etc witch I sometimes hit by mistake. The help screen does not help much and I usually must power down.

Try hitting left shift and ¨

This may be too simple, but--

There is a Settings button next to logout--

This is a screen shot of the language tab:

Thank you all for your help. Feel a bit dumb now that I have found the problem. On the log in screen at the bottom left next to the Facebook Copyright 2008 sign is a language drop down menu. Change to English and problem solved. Sounds easy but when the whole screen is in Chinese it is not that easy. How it got changed in the first place will be a topic of discussion with "she who must be obeyed". Thanks again!

Hello The Prof:

Have you checked your computer Language Settings?

Go to Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Regional Options, and click the 'down arrow' to change your version of English or choose another Language.

On Facebook. Click Settings > Accounts > then click the Language tab to alter back to English (UK)? If that is what you want. This should work.

Good luck..............
