Looking For A Hot Plastic

12/09/2008 11:34 AM

Looking for a plastic coating for use as an insulator and for creating a nice finish coating surface. Some of the requirements for this plastic are: The plastic can accept color additives; the plastic can be applied to the outside of a stainless steel or aluminum can; the plastic should have insulating properties to keep heat from escaping from the heated can; the plastic can be applied by dipping or spraying; the finished look should be smooth; the plastic product should be able to withstand a constant 325 degrees F. after the curing process. Is there any such plastic product out there for this use or should I be looking at a powered metal technique? Any help is appreciated.

Hello vapsterinventor:

Can you tell me why this coating has to be effective at such high temperatures?

My first thought is the insulating wire coating on normal electrical wire. But I am not sure if it would take the heat.

The other thing, although it is a spray coating it may not be removable, is Teflon?

Still looking though.

Thanks for the input. I have oven mits made from silicon. This material appears to be a good remedy. How does the silicon product get applied to the outside of my heater can? The heater can is in the shape of an insulated foam beer can holder. I am looking to apply the coating to the bottom, sides, and the top lip.

I would assume either molding or dipping would be possible. How thick a layer do you want?

Hello vapsterinventor:

http://www.monsterguide.net/how-to-use-silicon-caulk.shtml

Let me know if you find this site useful.

You can make a mold and put your container in before you put the Silicone in, it is going to be messy. You can't paint it, so the answer maybe to build a box which allows say 1 cm all round cover the bottom, and work quickly as it will get a 'skin' on it as it begins to cure, put your box into the new container pushing it down and making sure it is level and square. Then get half a dozen tubes and cut the ends of to allow a nice thick wide squirt of silicone to be pushed out. Fill the gap all round and use a smooth bit of straight plastic, something like a credit card to finish off the top to make a smooth a finish as you can. Leave to dry with a cloth cover to keep any bugs or other animals from it, packing the cloth cover to stop it from touching the silicone.

Silicone and teflon both fit the bill. teflon will cold flow over time though, especially at that elevated temp. I'd say silicone is the polymer family you should be looking at.

Hello Rorschach:

I wonder if you can see me thinking?

I put Teflon, though I was not sure of the properties. I also knew, but could not think of the name of the 'oven glove I have been using today.....Silicone!

I can't really think of anything that might fit the bill.............?

And we still have not heard from the OP to answer any questions............

Take care and happy holiday................
