Looking for a High-Accuracy Turbine Flowmeter

12/11/2008 2:46 PM

I am looking for a Turbine Flowmeter that has an accuracy of 0.025% Full Scale. I need it to measure Red Oil on military spec aircraft components. The closest I have been able to come to was 0.050% accuracy. If anybody knows of where I can find one, please let me know.

Accuracy of turbine flow meters is limited better use a gear flow meter which after calibration can meet your requirements.

I do know what you are saying but I am in sales and this is a request from one of my customers. I have talked to them time and time again about using a Positive Displacement Flowmeter instead. They insist on use a Turbine type. This is why I have resorted to throwing this question out there. I have checked with all the Turbine Flowmeter companies I can think of and none of them can do it. I'm starting to think I am chasing a unicorn.

Do you know of anybody out there that can do that high of accuracy? Thanks for the feedback though.

Riot,

You may not need accuracy as much as you need repeatability. Try another search, but this time, look for repeatability rather than accuracy and see if the numbers don't come closer. There are more accurate types of meters, but you will find that as you get extreme accuracy you begin to pay a considerable penalty in price, pressure drop and durability.

Hi Riot

Have you tried Hydrotechnik? They are as good as I've found (after they have given you a calibration cert for programming the offsets into a data logger). You will also need one meter of straight pipe on either side of the turbine (to induce laminar flow)!

They have a branch at Nottingham UK with the main factory in Germany.

If the device is going to be permanently fitted, you will need a filter down stream to catch the turbine bits when it spits it's guts into something important.

Depending on the usage repeatability can or cannot be main parameter. If the flowmeter is used as volume or flow measuring device uncertainty (global ie lack of accuracy+repeatability) are requested.

If one has the possibility to calibrate the device on site then repeatability can be sufficient.

I used the Hydrotechnik which are good within the prescribed limits. Turbines being function of flow impact (velocity) are limited in accuracy at low flow values.

It is good practice to protect the rotor from the impact of parts carried by the flow (accidentally) since its bearings can be harmed and friction increased which reduces accuracy.

look at these guys. They are the leaders in oil and gas metering.

And the best will be :

You may not find equipment with accuracy of .025% of full scale. And you will hardly find anybody who would commit to this accuracy because there may not be any calibration facility that have suitable testing equipment to guaranty overall accuracy of one third of your required accuracy (normal rule used for calibration).
