First you need to decide who is going to survey the vessel and supervise the construction. You may also have to decide who is going to insure it and if they will insist on a particular standard of construction. Everybody has a different standard. Next you must decide which flag state will register the vessel. This will also have a bearing on which Standard is applied.

Lloyds is the best - and also the most expensive. We estimate it cost around 20% more to design a vessel to Lloyds Standards than the other standards. For scantlings( calculations of your conceptual design) you can check American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Germanischer Lloyd (GL) or Det Norske Veritas (DNV) or RINA . All of them give the relevant formula for material strenght etc that they require to met their standard.

Good luck.

Yes elnav, you are right, only I like to add : LR (Lloyd's Register), Moody and BV (Bureau Veritas).

Foot note to "guest"

Ship resort system@floating island suggest this is not a trivial project of a few hundred or thousand tonnes displacement. If this is the case, the difference between one class and another can amount to many tons of steel, not to mention a significant cost factor in required systems.

The difference between classes can amount to huge cost differences. I suggest this should be your starting point in design. Once you have settled on which standard to design to then you can get serious about scantlings and so on. As for procedures etc. thatbecomes more of a builder issue than design issue. Or are you contemplating doing a modular approach now being used in some yards?
