HP Laptop Runs Slowly

12/15/2008 8:44 AM

Dear All,

Pls my H.P Laptop which i bought sometime ago runs so slow. Initially I thought it was due to Norton Antivirus which I have changed to bitfinder yet it keeps running so slow that at times it will just seize to respond.

Please kindly advise me on what to do next.

Regards to all Engineers in the house.

I was told that it is good practice to reinitialize the OS once a year to get rid of all the junk. Save all the files you want first. Also you can max out the memory.

A couple of things to try - defrag the drive and run a scanner for malware, adware or viruses.

Any of these could slow you down

Sounds like you need to save your documents on something external, reformat your hard drive, and re-install your operating system. You probably have many bugs/viruses. I personally would'nt even try to eliminate them, cause you most likely will never get rid of them all.

Just be careful you don't back-up the viruses as well. I'd reformat and re-install as a last resort, as in my experience, most such slowdowns can be fixed without this drastic step.

XP or Vista ? HDD size ? memory allocation ? I clean and repair computers for a living; irregardless of the OS, remember these tips.

1-keep your HDD size to resource used to around a 4 to 1 ratio, and as far as memory goes, whatever your motherboard will accept is recommended.

2-AVG Free antivirus and antispyware; this program is free and I have used it exclusively for the past 6 - 7 years with no problems (AVG Free.com)

3-Web tracks eraser by SK Labs can be found at www.web-tracks.com; run this EVERYTIME you get off of the 'net; it only takes seconds, and prevents your memory from being loaded up.

4-Auslogics.com has the BEST defrag program around, and it is free; it runs in minutes vs. hours for Windows

5-Superantispyware.com, there is the free version and the pro version; this company advertise that they find all of the spyware, not just the easy ones; and they certainly live up to their claim

6-CCleaner.com; this is one excellent program, also free. Set the cleaning and scanning options to Gutteman 35 passes and you will be glad that you did. when you first use this it may take "awhile" to scan and clean initially; however when your system is cleaned on a consistent basis, it will normally run in less than 10 seconds.

I use these on my customers computers and have them on my personal desktop and laptop........my desktop is a 6 year old Compaq Presario with a Sempron Processor / 250 GB HDD / and 1 Gb memory and when on the net has been tested to change screens in as little as .80 seconds. This system is XP and I have utilized about 14% of the HDD capacity. My laptop is a new HP with Vista / 80Gb HDD / and 2Gb memory. this is the computer that I use for running diagnostics and repair sequences.

If you need any help with your computer, please feel free to email me at barnyardpc@gmail.com

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

Mr. Germany, is the last comment relevant to our forums ? Just for the record, "technically" neither am I an engineer; I was never afforded the chance to go to college, as living life got in the way; so I spent my entire working career studying and learning from whomever and wherever I could. Today, at just under 60 years of age, I am retired and work on computers for my "living".

I am an adjunct instructor at the local technical college, teaching computers, electrical ( I am licensed commercial electrical contractor ), hydraulics and pneumatics, robotics, and factory automation, welding and machining. All self taught; we must not assume that engineers are a "cut above" the average worker or person. I know some very good engineers who work on production lines or drive trucks, simply because they wanted out of the rat race.

After nearly 30 years in and around manufacturing, I would rather have a non-degreed engineer who knew my processes than a degreed one who only knew "standards"; I am not saying that standards are not important, but practical application engineering must adapt and change to suit the process, sometimes on a day to day basis. What is on the drawing board may be right (technically), but not workable in your actual process.

If your comments cannot build up or help, please refrain for the good of the community.

Thank you

Dude, get over yourself. He gave you a good answer. That is the boards way of saying that you gave helpful advice. He then added a bit of levity to his response. Life is way too short to take yourself so seriously that you ragard everything as an attack.

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

I did not regard the comment as an attack; simply stating that the so called "levity" came across more as negative, based on the fact that Mr. Germany did not have sufficient information to "throw out such a claim".

The purpose of these forums is to enlighten, help, and nuture the engineering environment both locally and globally. When we deviate from that prime objective, we not only harm the individual, but the entire community as well. I am sorry if my comments were taken out of context, that is not the intent.

Whether degreed or non-degreed is actually irrelevant for the most part; although I will admit that you save a lot of time and effort by going to school and following the ladder; this is not always viable for some. Your success is not defined by where you are at, but more by the direction that you are going.

In response to "dude, get over yourself" that was said simply to allow the "community" to understand that their are people in this environment that are adequately filling the roles of engineers, that for whatever reason did not attain a degree. I am more impressed by the employee who is hungry for knowledge and improvement than the the one who achieves the degree and stops their learning curve there.

Again, apologies to you and the entire forum if I have offended; but I must retain that we must at all times pursue to uplift and lead, nurture and encourage as we go.

Wow! You guys are funny. This poor guy is just asking about why his laptop is running slow and you guys have officially turned it into a heated discussion about "levity" and directions in life. I still think his computer is over heating.

Apologies..............but required. Maybe this is a topic for another forum, maybe education ? However, it is not "heated" discussion; you see what you see, because you are where you are. I will end this part of my "input". I have given solutions for laptop maintenance, and we will let it lie there.

No worries Dude! I am more entertained by the comments of this discussion. I am not too computer saavy anyway. I have an HP laptop and thought I would give my input. You keep doing what you're doing. Someday I may need your advice too.

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

Regards.

Your comment is quite valid.

< .. I still think his computer is over heating. >

I have seen the same problem. Both the CPU & HDD were overheating.

I beat the heat of HDD by removing the cover of HDD. It didn't fully resolved.

I locally fabricated a LIFT-UP case with a cooling-fan which almost resolved the problem of heat.

But other steps had to be taken for remedy of slowness:

1. Increased RAM to 1G

2. Deleted temp files & Cleaned Registry with Advanced SystemCare, it is updated very frequently.

I use the latest ver with latest updates.

3. Un-installed rarely used programs.

4. Defragged after all this.

5. A tip in Win98 was to fix Virtual-Memory size I remebered but in a tip for XP stated

that it does not work in XP & I believed & never tried.

But tried & found quite helpful.

Regards.

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

It is not a crime to need help, but it is still a constant source of amazement to me at how some people somehow think that we are all fitted with a Crystal Ball to somehow "Guess" at all the missing infos.

The person concerned will (hopefully) learn from what I wrote and gain thereby....

I was taught that when I needed help, I should err on the side of too much info, rather than too little, as I am at that moment not in a position to judge what is relevant and what is not. Hopefully my helper (if I chose reasonably well) can analyse what is important and what is not!!!!

Telling the truth in all things is also not to my mind a failure, and the truth was that too little info was supplied for the question.......

Now if you have a problem with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth then the problem is yours not mine........

But I will say one thing, most humans have more problems in hearing the truth rather than a lie, sad to say. Therefore you are not alone in this world, there are many of the same opinion as yourself.

I tend not to have such people as friends as I believe in calling a spade a spade (or a F*****G Shovel!!).....a trait that seems to seen most strongly in both Engineers with degrees and those without......we are a strange bunch, I know........but I would still rather have one of them than 1000 of the other sort.......! (Not that ONLY Engineers can handle the truth, I have luckily many friends who can handle the truth, it stops a lot of misunderstanding (Wars!) dead in its tracks!!!

You have your opinion, I have mine, I respect yours without agreeing with it. Please feel free to do the same for mine!!

I wish you a great day.

Most of the people prefer their category while Degrees & Experience both have their standing.

Being Engineer you can pull-on just by signing in office but can not stay in field without experience.

But an experienced person with a fair tech-know-how can stay upright anywhere.

I fully agree with your post #5 & in addition willyap06's post #7 for Advanced SystemCare

I am using most of these. It will be of help if you please give the links of programs you recommend.

Have a Good Day: X-Mas Day !!!!!

Try Advanced SystemCare ver. 3.0.1 from IObit.com. It's free, very user-friendly, and most of all it works. You'll be glad you did.

Good luck.

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

I have an HP laptop myself and one thing I have found is that it gets hot really fast just sitting flat on a table top while running. It will literally freeze up (no pun intended) until the air can flow better. You also might be having the same trouble I have. It might help to set it up on something to let the air flow better. I prop mine on a book I have that is just thick enough to let the air flow better. They also sell cooling stands for this purpose at office supply stores. I'm cheap so the "Elvis" book I have works just fine. If yours is like mine than the vents are on the left side of the bottom. Try this first before you start changing programs and rebooting.

Riot Bag,

Firstly, I like your Avatar...

I too have a HP laptop that generated an enormous amount of heat. It "froze" several times due to the heat build-up, and now, after my daughter watched several DVDs in a row on the laptop, with it sitting on her bed (starving the fan's airflow), the unit has crashed and seems to be DOA.

In my opinion, this laptop is a poor engineering design, having all cooling air intake via a fan on the bottom of the unit. The fan can be easily obstructed or totally blocked if you try to use the "laptop" on your lap.

I'm not even sure if it is worthwile for me to bring the laptop in for service...

==============================================================

Just my $0.02...

It might just be the CPU that needs replacement, sadly, but still quite cheap in comparison to buying a new laptop.....Intel chips don't like heat to any degree....was it intel?

Your other comments about the design of the cooling are totally correct and should be learned by all laptop owners......even AMD chips want cool air over them too!!!

People who are on the move need laptops, but for most of us they are really only a lower powered expensive liability, especially if you are not very computer savvy.....a desktop of floor model is cheaper, more powerful for the same price and far far easier and cheaper to repair....

Good answer oldgolfer as you can see I use several of the titles you listed.

Note:You can learn a lot on here but have to be thick skinned. Andy Germany railed me too but I think he meant well.

Re: HP Laptop Runs Slowly

I have an HP laptop, It's never overheated, but i definitely can understand how it could. It can definitely warm up your leg if its on your lap. It was running terribly slow up until approx 1 month ago. I had been using it for a couple of years with no major problems. The longer i had it the slower it got. finally it was nearly not functional. So i ordered a new set of recovery disks (seemed to have misplaced the originals ) for about 10 bucks. I reformatted that sucker, and am sooo glad i did. today it runs like a dream. 98% of the "junk" i had accumulated was never used, and just filled up my registry with useless crap. It's clean and fast now.
