Er, why is the lens grinning?

In a photocopier, Yes.

Might be a little difficult for reading the new york times while having a cup of coffee. It also depends what type of grin lens it is. May be good for one line at a time, but certainly not worth the effort. It's used mostly to focus light, not to read print through.
