Amateur Car Designs

That may go a long way to explain why they all look more or less the same, read dull, uninspired. At first glance you would think one company designs everything.

What sells gets copied. A little (not so) secret that Japan learned all too well from US. So, in a sense one company does design everything (of a sort).

Good example: the Ford F150 and its offspring, the Ranger. When these became established as overwhelming market dominators, every other brand (except Chrysler which had nothing to lose by not copying) quickly became Ford pickup style clones. First to try to blur the distinction that Ford's trucks had was Toyota; and look where it got them (with Tacoma).
