Seeking engineering projects for international aid

10/25/2006 3:39 PM

I'm interested in traveling to and working for an aid project that needs engineers in areas that are economically deprived or coping with famine, war, natural disaster, etc. (I rule out Iraq right now). I imagine this would involve developing infrastructure, water resources or who knows what? My cubicle walls are closing in and my social conscience won't shut up these days.

Adding to the challenge is my background in aerospace/mechanical engineering with fairly specialized and well-funded technologies. That leads me to wonder how much of what we learn as engineers can contribute anything to the basic necessities of life? Maybe a discussion for another thread.

Health care workers seem to be most in demand for these things. I've discovered Engineers Without Borders (EWB), but my local chapter is inactive or non-existant. Peace Corps, with a two year commitment and no guarantees of working in my field, is not an option right now. Paid work assignments versus volunteering would be another important choice.

Thanks for any ideas, links, etc.

Are you interested in helping out in Armenia ?

I know of an Aid group that helps out (with 2-3 full-time U.S. personnel) in building infrastructure, water, electrical services, etc for this former soviet republic that has a low economic work.

Please reply and I can provide you with more information

Yes I would be interested - thanks.

I am researching what projects are out there and I am not yet committed to a location. Maybe this is of interest to others on the forum as well.

I have no programs or organizations to suggest.

I do have a general comment. I have read that many of the countries needing technology improvements get along best with equipment and processes that are simple, intuitive to operate and repair, and that use widely available components. Sometimes this is not current technology but perhaps older generation designs, proven and well understood. For example a manually operated water pump may be much better, cheaper, and more easily operated than an electrical pump. Some of these countries have a surplus of labor that can manually pump water but a shortage of support and labor needed for more complicated equipment.

Good luck with your efforts.

Now for a little rant. Note my proper use of the term "technology". I mean anything to improve quality of life including structures, mechanical devices, electrical, electro-mechanical, etc. Unfortunately the IT industry and the news media have hijacked the term "technology" to refer only to computers and software. We engineers know that there is a great deal of technical work that falls outside computers and software.

I think people should help others near them and that includes helping themselves. Moving into the world means you have no reason to be where you are. This is possible when you have less chance of getting funded for projects in your country and are looking for funds elsewhere. Innovative people should find work anywhere.

I was with the best research lab in India and now I am with village people who have least technology ideas. I can find lot of work here. In similar way if you move towards your country side where you are and you will find many in need of technology. They will also be willing to pay small money for it. There are many world bank funded projects in each country.

Those with technology should not look for job outside country unless that is something essential. Be clear in your mind first as no one is 100% extra qualified than others. You can't even manufacture a match box if you are not trained in that trade. Try to drill a hole in a needle and you get into problem. Hence, technology people are often on the road and everywhere. They do not move out or tell any one that they know more than others. They just keep doing something wherever they are.

I think your barber is a technology man and finds job next street, so is the carpenter, and tailor etc. It is often lots of problem with engineers and scientists that they find themselves out of job. They also consider themselves much better than others and with all knowledge on the earth. This is a serious mistake (blunder).

If you know even just one thing that this world does not know then that should give you a patent, which you can pass as technology with some return to yourself. It is better to realize the fact much early than to get affected by the problem seriously. May be you or many others may have great capabilities and want to help the world. Then there are lists of projects, missions, where you can move into.

My comments are to make our world better and remove pain out of people's mind. I will feel sorry if any one is hurt from my comments and are not meant to hurt any one's feelings. People should analyze their capability first and then plan accordingly. I do in same way and travel the entire Globe and return home to find more love here than anywhere else even though the entire world is equally good and I am freind of you all there.

Abasile60, have you found anything new on this. I am a somewhat recent ME grad and am having a hard time staying in the cube. I love mechanical design and would hope that I can travel internationally to the corners of the world with it. Any information you have found would be awesome...
