I'm interested in traveling to and working for an aid project that needs engineers in areas that are economically deprived or coping with famine, war, natural disaster, etc. (I rule out Iraq right now). I imagine this would involve developing infrastructure, water resources or who knows what? My cubicle walls are closing in and my social conscience won't shut up these days.
Adding to the challenge is my background in aerospace/mechanical engineering with fairly specialized and well-funded technologies. That leads me to wonder how much of what we learn as engineers can contribute anything to the basic necessities of life? Maybe a discussion for another thread.
Health care workers seem to be most in demand for these things. I've discovered Engineers Without Borders (EWB), but my local chapter is inactive or non-existant. Peace Corps, with a two year commitment and no guarantees of working in my field, is not an option right now. Paid work assignments versus volunteering would be another important choice.
Thanks for any ideas, links, etc.
