BIOS ROM Error

01/05/2009 8:34 AM

Hi, I wish someone can help me. When I turned on my computer, it shows a message "BIOS ROM ERROR..." and "DETECTING A FLOPPY DRIVE a:". I changed the CPU battery, but no luck. Please tell me how to correct this problem. I use WindowsXP. Thank.

Might be a silly question, but does that mean you have a floppy disk in the drive?

The floppy disk is not the drive. At first I thought the same thing.

usually it is you fail to set up COMS.

try this way,

turn on power, press del key when start display. entry cmos setup. check item of start from. change it into C: or C: A: or C: cdrom: A: order with space key or pg up or down ky..

thats ok.

it has nothing to do with bettery.

I agree. It is probably a BIOS (Basic In Out System) problem. When you replace the BIOS battery you loose important settings on some computers. It is not like flash memory. You must enter your BIOS (CMOS type chip) set up. Usually your screen will display briefly on boot up what key to press to enter set up. You must specify your storage hardware and what order to boot in. Usually A:(floppy), D:(cd-rom, dvd), C:(hard drive) but not necessarily in that order. There may be other settings that are necessary to eliminate your error message. Set up varies some what from one system to another. Good luck, Keywalker p.s. Is your hard drive working or do you get that far?

I had another thought (chilly one at that). It may be that your hard drive is fried. Your computer can not boot from it and is looking for a boot disk in drive A:.

That could be a reason. But the message is on as soon as I start the computer, means, it don't even do a memory test and even before the BIOS setup option. I mean my computer is stalled at the message and I cannot get in the setup.

If you can not even enter into BIOS setup then maybe the error message can be taken at face value and there is really something wrong with your BIOS chip. It could be that the instructions in your chip have been corrupted or the chip is damaged somehow. In any event it would seem that you need expert help at this point. Preferably an authorized service center. Are we talking desktop or laptop? If desktop, then another option might be to replace the mother board. It might be cheaper than a service call and you could upgrade at the same time. Not recommended for novices though.
