File Names for .JPG and .MP3 Downloads

01/05/2009 11:07 AM

Hi, When downloading jpgs and mp3s (legally), they sometimes come up as a file, needing a full stop between the songmp3 so it is song.mp3, and then it is recognised again. I tried it on another PC and it automatically put in the full stop. Any ideas?

Do you have "Hide extensions for known file types" checked? No idea why it should affect the software, but it confuses me ...

No, its not checked but picjpg comes up as a file, no extra info as to what file until you put in the full stop eg. pic.jpg

Regards.

Is it from your on-line Mail Server or a download site?

And are you using a downloader or Saving file with "Save the Target as" ?

You may have option to save in specific file format and or to rename the file.

Make enquiry to AndyGermany.

Bondy111,

This sounds like a basic problem of the operating system having associations to known file types. The "." is a reserved character in the file naming structure, to separate the name from the type. All "legal" characters which precede the "." are part of the file name. The characters that follow the "." are the extension to the file name; and describe the file type. The operating system matches the type on its file associations table with specified programs. When you are downloading, the extension may not be present in the source file, so you would have to add it yourself. If it is present in the source file, I would expect the software doing the download to retain the extension. Since there are many programs that can download software, it is very possible you have dealt with one that is less "friendly" or is expecting more direction from you.
