Generator Shortage

10/26/2006 1:59 PM

It appears with the growth of Internet companies and the larger demand for data centers hasa hit a new snag; there aren't enough diesel generators to supply the demand. Some sources are saying that it can take over a year now to get one delivered do to the high demand.

From Data Center Knowledge:

"Generator lead time for a nice 2 megawatt diesel engine is now up to a year for one generator," Josh Snowhorn of Terremark said in a panel at the NANOG conference earlier this year. "So we can build all the raised floor we want, and then sit around and wait six months for a generator."

Needless to say this was followed by :

On Sept. 5 Caterpillar said it would raise generator prices by 5 to 7 percent, while Cummins followed suit Sept. 25 with a 10 percent price hike.

So anyone having problems with getting generators, or is it just the data centers that are having problems?

Everybody is. The demand for portable DGs skyrocketed after Katrina and the other hurricanes that season. I have a friend who has made big bucks this year flying around the world inspecting and evaluating old junker DGs in jungles and old mines, seeing if they are salvageable. If they are, people are hiring sky crane helocopters to lift them out. Now THAT is desperate!

Where do I go to get a job like that? I think that would be the perfect job for my particular skill set.

Why not just start by finding old generators near you. Buy one, fix it up, paint it and sell it. Just keep doing that until you can afford world travel and sky hook helicopters. Seek and ye shall find. Ask and it will be granted unto you.

God Bless,

That is exactly how my freind started. He noticed that most people in the DG business around him were only interested in working with new equipment. He began offering services on existing units, then as people got to know him they recommended him to their friends etc. etc. He eventually gained a reputation for being able to quickly evaluate whether or not a DG set was salvageable or not, and once other people started making money using him, he started getting work all over the world.
