Lenora

I think it best you find someone to hook up a test book (diagnostic computer) to the car to find which component has failed. Setting the timing on modern vehicles with computer controlled engines is not as simple as pointing a strobe at the crank shaft and adjusting the distributor. Considering the age of the car I would suspect component failure, but without knowing the mileage that would be a wild guess.

Don't panic, it could be as simple as an air temperature sensor, or maybe an exhaust sensor, which is more likely.

Most local independent automotive repair shops will be able to diagnose the problems for you.

Good luck

Kevin

5 degrees BTDC but Kevin has good info as there is a special procedure to adjust the timing. The proper procedure is explained on the emission label under the hood. If you would give a little more information in the way of symptoms then you could probably receive more info. Hope it helps.
