PhD Ideas for Mechanical Engineering

01/06/2009 2:03 PM

Hello every body

I have recently graduated in MSc in Mechanical engineering and I would like to pursue my education in PhD. I would be extremely grateful if you help me and introduce me some interesting topics or sources in Built environment, HVAC and energy field for PhD research proposal. Thank you so much for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Reza

If it were my PhD dissertion, I'd investigate natural cooling used in traditional Iranian architecture with an eye toward applying these techniques to modern HVAC designs.

For example, in 400 BC Iran, Persian engineers had already mastered the technique of storing ice in the middle of summer in the desert. The ice was brought in during the winters from nearby mountains in bulk amounts, and stored in specially designed, naturally cooled refrigerators, called yakhchal (meaning ice storage). This was a large underground space (up to 5000 m³) that had thick walls (at least two meters at the base) made out of a special mortar called sārooj, composed of sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat hair, and ash in specific proportions, and which was resistant to heat transfer. This mixture was thought to be completely water impenetrable. The space often had access to a Qanat, and often contained a system of windcatchers that could easily bring temperatures inside the space down to frigid levels in summer days. The ice was then used to chill treats for royalty during hot summer days.

Talk about sustainable engineering! We need something better than the current dismal state of HVAC. We could learn a thing or two from this ancient Persian architecture.

Very good idea and GA, Europium!

there are some buildings in southern Maroc - most aggregated on the "Street of Kasbah's" where these principles are used.

This architecture is a mix of arabian and old local culture.

I am sure that this can be adopted to modern buildings - may be towerlike buildings will be necessary.

Congratulations on earning the same knowledge a BSME would have received in the early 70's. You have paid more for the same. Only salvation is that today's BSME graduate is receiving the same that a AA degreed individual received in the 70s.

Recommend to get out there in industry and get hands dirty with work that requires

accountability for your work. That way it is possible that such phenomena will sink in to develop your own "value add- accountable research to society sort of thought " in

said academic mind.

Cheers

Hi,

cotton is

a. too expensive,

b. subject to rot and poisoning users by spores of mold (aspergillus is very toxic),

Think about: clay, palm leaves reinforced by clay or vice versa, lapilli, foam glass, pumice, pots or other objects made from clay.....

If you see that thread i didn't recommend something like that, just suggested take a look about some documents availables in internet, recent developments (no taditional HVAC),some to start some research in patents files related and others subjects like windcatchers or coolant towers by wiki. You will see too interestings suggestions by others participants in tht thread.-

Suggest you find a green energy topic: Desalinization in buildings, horizontal wind generators at the top sides of buildings to use heat rising off the surface, cheaper smart glass (maybe using carbon nanotubes instead of more expensive liquid crystal between glass), cooling using rotational spin to separate air flows into different temp streams -- no coolant, retrofitting heat pump systems to use geothermal cooling (temperate zone shallow trenches are very effective a meter or more below ground like a septic system), any inexpensive energy storage medium from super-capacitors to light-weight-high rpm evacuated flywheels, energy from refuse -- pick an area where you would really like to work and then find some researcher in a related field for a mentor (read their work 'til you understand it - then write them or visit them and see if they won't take you on as a grad student) - you need to know where you want to go with an idea to get financial support in getting a doctorate. Remember your work must be original and everything I mentioned above has been done (some decades ago) but you have to provide original insight.

The more you learn the more you realize that many of today's models and simulations don't match reality well.

Hope that helps

I have never met a PHD in mechanical. Make sure you can get a job. I have seen one job listing that said PHDs need not apply.

I met one - a grizzled old rancher in southwestern Colorado - but he said his PhD stood for post-hole digger.
