Vapor and gas are one and the same, but we often talk about the vapor phase when you have something that is evaporating, i.e., a liquid and a gas together. The evaporation of a liquid to a gas requires an input of heat energy; that heat is drawn from the surroundings, which causes cooling - the principle behind air conditioning.
