Centrifugal Pumps

01/07/2009 11:06 AM

i wanted to know if there are any special conditions under which we use horizontal or vertical centrifugal pumps.

i also needed to know when it is best to use a centrifugal or reciprocating pump?

waiting eagerly for the answers.

Horizontal impeller (vertical shaft) is used in dewatering pumps for example. (The eye is needed close to the floor to dispose of as much water as possible) .

A bore hole turbine is also an example.

Reciprocating pumps are positive displacement pumps and used on windmills to deliver under varying wind conditions.

Piston pumps (recipocating) can deliver smaller quantities at high heads.

Sorry I am always thinking of water and not chemicals but you may need a dewatering pump or need to remove all the fluid from a tank.

The choice in chemicals would depend on the fluid. A centrifugal may not be the best for pumping syrups.

Dear Chemengg

The centrifugal pumps are used where:

1- the need of high flow rate, the low heads.

2- low viscosity (thin oils).

3- cheap price.

4- working at high speeds.

5-has no built in saftey relief valve.

7- No chemicals because of slipping that occurs causing heating the fluid.

The recirocating are used where:

1-when the fluid is sensitive to shear.

2-high viscosity.

3- low speed is needed.

4- Non pulsating discharge.

5- relatively NPSH reguired.

6- very high head is needed (such as hydraulic systems).

Thanks

Aly
