LPG Vessel / Tank Water Gallon (WG) Conversion

01/08/2009 6:13 AM

Please I would like to know why a vessel like cylinder is rated in gallons. Also, how is water gallon WG converted to kilograms? for example in a 2800 WG tank, how many, 12.5kg LPG(butane) cylinder can be filled?

It is rated in gallons a unit measure of volume because that was the unit of measure of the country of manufacture or intend market area. A unit of measure of volume can not be directly converted into a unit measure of weight(kilograms). The material in which you fill it would have to be known. So which is it water or LPG? The two have a different weight per gallon.

The vessel/tank is used for LPG storage and then to dispense LPG into cylinders. The tank is in gallon ( 2800 W.G) and I also notice that cylinders are usually expressed in Kg, water capacity in litres. so is there a way to know the number of say 12.5kg cylinder that can be filled by a 2800 W.G tank used for LPG dispensing.

You could calculate the volume of the 2800 W.G. tank and also calculate the volume of a 12.5 KG cylinder, a little division will give you a rough approximation.

I believe the 12.5 is a relatively standard size and a quick Google search provided;

Propane Tank. Type: 12.5kg, water capacity: 26.6L, service, .... [Related Keywords: propane and butane propane tank propane cylinder dimethoxy propane ...

www.tootoo.com/buy-propane_tank/ - 121k - Cached - Similar pages

Convert liters to gallons and you get your answer.

Remember Google is your friend.

These tanks that you are filling are they industry standards. Fork lift tanks, barbecue tanks they all have a standard volume which any tank wholesaler should have specs on to get volume. If in the US these tanks now have a device that will only allow tanks to be filled to 80% of their volume.

Typical fuel cylinders like Butane, Propane are measured in Kg or Lbs because that is the weight of the gas when filled. Ever take a propane tank in for a re-fill? They place it on a scale and fill it until it hits a pre-set weight. This is not a standard however, other gasses are measured by vessel capacity at pressure, Scuba Diving tanks for example, in cubic feet.

Total confusion and I suspect this really doesn't answer your question does it???

I know fuel cylinders like Butane, propane are measured in Kg.But an empty cylinder is expresseed in kg,water capacity, lbs.

This tank am talking about is 2800W.G for LPG dispensing.I want to know the number of cylinders(12.5kg when filled) that this tank can fill.

is there a formular for this?

Hello ikaleguy:,

http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/weight2volume

You may have to change the metric to something other than volume?

I am sending you a clever converter anyway. But the weight of water at 4°C is 10 Lbs A Kilo is 2.2 Lbs.

Here is the conversion chart. It will convert anything, you just need to enter a figure and the rest will fill automatically.

From my quick calculation you can fill 224 12.5 Kg Gas Cylinders. But check it out on the conversion chart. You may lose a tank of gas due to revaporization.

Just take care if you are not sure wear a Gas Mask.

And work in an open area not a factory.

Take care...........And have a great and lucky new year!

The general equation for the relation between volume and mass is : Mass in kg = Volume in m3 x Density in kg/m3

Sometimes the density is represented by the specific gravity:

a. Density of liquid = Density of water x Specific Gravity of liquid

b. Density of gas = Density of air x Specific Gravity of gas

Its rated characterized in gallons because gallons is the general unit of measure for what ever is metered into it...such as LPG which is sold "by the gallon." Simple.

I have often needed to covert units of measurements. My wife suggested a Google search for conversion. What I found is a number of web site hosting conversion from dry, weights, liquids, standard, metric plus conversion of stuff I never heard of.

One I use most often is Online Conversion http://www.convert-me.com/en/ a person selects a category in your case weight to volume converter put in a number in the box and the click on the convert box. And it converts your number to long list of measurements, like tonne, grams, cubic meter, fluid gallon. Plus you can pick a substance. Try it you'll like it.

http://www.onlineconversion.com/

Very useful for everyone to have saved to Favorites have fun. If you do not find what your are looking for in a converting units here do a new Google search.

Good luck Everett w.

Hello to all here,

I just want to get something straight.

The OP asked how many 'gallons of liquid gas, which is measured in this case by the same size 'gallon' measure as water. Now do we really need to go into the mol weight etc. The OP asked how many Gallons? I think my answer was 220. That IS what he asked.

Or am I missing something here?

Take care to all and have a great new year!
